Honestly speaking, given its origins it did surprisingly well. Remember, the vast, VAST majority of anime is 1cour, maybe 2, and then that's it and nothing happens with it ever again except an ever shrinking number of fans and ever rarer bits of fanart. BRS got the original bit, then an OVA, anime, manga, and multiple video games. For a moon IP that's pretty damn solid.
It doesn't seem to have transitioned into something eternal but that's not even necessarily a bad thing. Enjoy what you got and move on.

Yeah, the reveal in later half, especially so.
Everyone was mad at the 3D CG fight scenes at first, but it was actually pretty well done.
