Jose vs Joe was essentially a one-directional beatdown since the latter was punch drunk and quickly started suffering extreme brain damage. It's a wonder Joe even managed to get his shit together later on in the fight and started throwing proper punches at Mendoza.
Ippo doesn't have anything coming close emotionally to AnJ, but the fights are more entertaining to watch.

I liked his rival fights better, with Riikishi and Carlos being the highlights. As much as I hate the recent fad to constantly remake shit, I would like to see these two fights remade in the vein of something like Sendo vs Vorg from HnI.

Joe vs Rikishi was way better. The Ashita no Joe 1 fights were overall better mainly because of the sound direction.

Sendo's fights are worse than Ippo's, since it's literally Sendo tanking punches with his face until he lands a Smash. The fact that they often skip several rounds of his fight is a blessing, especially when he first started fighting Mexican opponents. Mashiba is the same way, but that's due to how limited to his style is vs not having any real to keep boxing except MUH KUMI.

It kinda feels like Morikwa goes overboard with that YAMATO DAMASHII in Ippo solely because Joe ended up getting killed in the ring.
It's for that reason, it's likely one of the characters in Ippo will eventually die in the ring, just to buck the status quo. Guys like Sendo, Mashiba, Vorg, Aokimura and Takamura are too obvious.
As a betting man, I'm thinking someone from the newer generation like Imai or Itagaki will end up dying or killing another boxer in the ring.
Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Ippo is the one to murder someone, even if it seems completely unlikely with Mori dangling that 'Lose one more time and I retire' carrot in front of us.
