What you don't understand is that while there is some pressure to watch it from the community, there's also some huge hurdles to get over.
1) age
It's a shit reason, but newfags are hesitant to pick up old stuff, especially if it isn't cyberpunk action OVAs. They're too busy watching the current season and whatever is popular on reddit at the moment.

2) Shinji and all-around depression
Watch 10 harems in a row (as newfags are wont to) and then try to get into NGE. It's fucking impossible. It seems like the concentrated essence of everything that makes anime bad. You need to clean your mouth of the bad aftertaste before going at it.
