SnK is not a masterpiece by any means, but it's fairly entertaining, and I can see how shows like this (such as Death Note) would attract attention in general.

Look at books and movies. For books, do the classics like russian classics, greek homer or any other literature get massconsumed? A few do, but most read a few because they have to for school. Same with movies, good movies can easily be beaten by some action flick. Look at all the superhero stuff. It has the depth of the kiddie pool but still it pulls a massive audience.

SnK has its moments, in spite of a large amount of filler and slow pacing. It has lots of emotion, action, and some of the characters are "badass." For SAO, the first arc of the first season wasn't bad at all, with good action scenes and a coherent plot, although the quality really dropped quickly after that. The same will happen with Kabaneri. I'm already seeing it with people posting in the threads "how do I play the mp4 file I dl'd? I'm on a mac. ;p"
I have a theory as to why normies single out shows like these. It has to do with them thinking of anime as "action cartoons." To normies, action = quality, and anything that's not action is a detractor. If you look at a show like K-ON, which lacks any action, they would equate the lack of action with a lack of quality, and think that it's terrible. Shingeki no Kyojin, on the other hand, has emotionally-charged, action-packed scenes in the first episode. To complete the picture, it lacks any semblance to "moe," which they have come to associate with low quality (i.e., no action) anime. The icing on the cake is that the plot and characters are a little "edgy," which they associate with maturity, so they think that watching SnK and other action anime makes them grown up (as opposed to watching non-action cartoons, like Sponge Bob), which must be a good thing.

Bad writing is easy to make exciting because the audience gets confused and thinks the plot is deep because of that. SAO has people reminiscent of MMORPG and SnK fits well with the trend of zombie shows in the west. Similar shows don't have the broad appeal. For example, Mahouka sells very well and is popular in the west, but doesn't have a premise that would attract normalfags.
