Almost the whole second season was shit though. The episodes between 10 and 20 being the low point, without any songs whatsoever. When it had songs, those were mostly redone from S1 or complete garbage. (but "Love" was nice)
On the other hand, S1 was as good as the concept and source material allowed, with fluid pacing, songs that were at least okay and nothing that felt like a pointless filler episode.

I agree that the show dragged a bit in the middle of S2. But I also think that S2 had the higher highs. The opening of the first ep of the second season is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series, and really represents how much they stepped up the direction in S2. That, ep 21, the ending, I would consider all of those points stronger than anything that happened in the first season. Regarding the episodes, don't quite remember what happened in ep. 21 (thought it was the overdone Romeo & Juliet stuff). but reading the synopsis doesn't bring up any fond memories. I know I found the last six or seven of them better than the middle section, but not very much. Also deleted S2, while I consider S1 an archive-worthy classic within its genre.

The beach episode was replaced with the music festival, the school festival was in Ep 20 and it was their last school performance and when they faced the fact the end was near. And the school trip was not only has a great dynamic between the girls but also was when Mio finally dropped the voice of reason act.

I love K-on but is not a show about music. The musical aspect is just an excuse to make the girls become friends. I can agreed that season one has less filler episodes but in the end season two made the most impact. The bad episodes are kind of dull but the good ones are really good.
Those who don't like K-ON's OPs doesn't understand the show. They fit the show perfectly. It's not only about music, you autistic fags. The scenes are wonderfully animated and paced, telling us about the happy daily lifes of the girls with quick shots and energic music. At the end, this is what K-ON! is about for the most part. Happiness and energy.

13 episode S2 with some more OVAs would have probably been perfect.
The OPs work better with Aki Toyosaki's lack of singing ability and raspy anime voice than the HTT songs she sings. The quick melodies circumvent her lack of power or vibrato.
