To simplify, depth charges damage external machinery much more than the interior due to the difference in compressability between water and air. Anyone in the conning tower is probably having a bad time, but they're probably not seriously injured. Their main issue is that their periscopes and snorkel are probably all fucked, and I wouldn't trust submerging again until the seals get looked at.

It doesn't make much sense for Mike to have stated her surprise at being made Captain to the instructor in the first episode if it wasn't going to be part of a twist later. Especially if, as you say, she shouldn't have been surprised at all as her grades reflect her position. All of this is kind of interesting since they don't show any actual shopping in the PV and the scene at the end with them sunbathing is the perfect moment for another ship to come out of nowhere. It is also interesting that they would resort to buying things at all- where the fuck would they get them?
