I don't think you quite understand how writing works. This is a common problem with anime watchers, because you're mostly a bunch of poorly educated manchildren. When you write a character, it's completely fine for him to make mistakes. You hear that? There's nothing wrong with a character to make mistakes. That's fine. There's something that isn't fine, however. You paying attention? I know people like you generally have a hard time focusing on basic shit like this, but I'll to simplify it as much as possible. When your character makes a mistake, and pay attention now because this is important, when your character makes a mistake, it needs to make sense in character. A character who has been built up as being clever and methodical making a mistake not even a 5 year old would make is out of character, and hence bad writing. You get that? It has nothing to do with me wanting him to be perfect. He can be as flawed as the writers want to make him, that's complete forgivable. What isn't forgivable for anyone with an IQ over 100 is making the MC act completely out of character for a sole scene just for the purpose of moving the story forwards. It was clumsy, and it was lazy, and you should be able to fucking acknowledge this.

The writers built Lelouch up to be this sort of genius, but during this scene they decided to tell you 'Fuck you! You're wrong! He's not a flawless genius. He can make the stupidest mistakes'. Also, the only reason Lelouch managed to survive Shirly and Mao is because of the unpredictable spilling of the photos, which made Shirly go all emotional. During that scene we see Lelouch outsmarted, and he acknowledges, that, but he manages to survive all due to a random, but reasonable, event.
In a way you can say he's assessing the anime's industry demand to make the MC invincible and flawless (OPM does this as well).
