I believe it's possible to create a good harem, but it requires a lot of effort and is beyond the capabilities of an average manga/LN writer.
Things necessary:
- A proper MC. An exceptional individual in some way (hence all the attention he gets), but without overdoing it, to not reach gary stu territory. He should get a proper story, development, strong personality.
A bland fanservice receiver won't work.
- A detailed relationship development for every girl. Something like giving a girl a single damsel in distress arc and putting her in a "I WANT TO SUCK YOUR DICK" state after one heroic rescue is a no-no.
Of course it requires skill to manage multiple romances at the same time.
- Two-sided romances. MC needs to grow more affectionate towards his girls, it should be visible that he has his own desires. No asexuals allowed.
Harem is not about WHY. It's about WHY NOT.
- No cockblocking, no stalling, no forcing a status quo. If two characters are in situation that should lead to kissing or sex, then let it happen.
And fuck purityfags.
- No forced fanservice. Since MC isn't a faggot, accidents can be replaced with consensual acts. Teasing, kissing, foreplay, sex. All with proper mood, chemistry and without beta male noises, will easily beat any amount of cliched garbage when it comes to turning dicks into diamonds.
- Harem management, especially the "how to fuck all girls and not get stabbed" part. Fantasy setting can just make MC a Demon Lord, Magic King or just hand-wave and decide that in this world harems are socially accepted. Alternatively have girls come from races/cultures with no grunges against polygamy.
Real life settings require much more effort, but when taken less seriously, MC's quest for building a harem can be an amusing plot line by itself. Just let comedy and fun excuse the lack of realism.
