mozc-ut with the ibus engine module.

AUR packages:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/mozc-ut/
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ibus-mozc-ut/

Info and configuration:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mozc#Variants_on_AUR
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mozc#mozc-ut
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mozc#Configuration

For autostarting the ibus engine module:

You can of course use regular mozc if you don't care about the ut dictionary (the ut version of mozc takes a long time to build):

>new guide has been in open suggestion mode for almost half a year now, how about actually making worthwhile suggestions there instead of just whining about it
It doesn't need any suggestions because the old guide served its purpose and didn't need to be changed. The only "suggestion" I have is to fuck the newer guide off and bring back the old one. My personal solution has been to suggest the previous version of the guide whenever someone is in need of it. I'd never suggest the current version of the guide because it is like the previous version, only gutted and has irrelevant opinionated shit added in by the egotistical brat who in in control of the current version.

Bear in mind that the default keymap will be kind of fucked up since it's intended for a Japanese keyboard which has special keys for switching between hiragana, katakana, etc. (see pic)

I switched the Japanese keys to stuff like CTRL+1, but you can do it however you prefer.

>I switched the Japanese keys to stuff like CTRL+1, but you can do it however you prefer.
Specifically, I only changed the keys for switching between hiragana and katakana. For hiragana, I use CTRL+1 and for katakana I use CTRL+2. I didn't bother changing any of the others since whenever I want to switch to Latin characters I just SUPER+SPACE to switch back to my English keymap.

Make sure you add both whatever your native keyboard layout is as well as "Japanese-Mozc" to your IBus preferences (right click the IBus icon and select "preferences").

>>140746246
QWERTY. Just spell the sound of the character you want to write. To get the ん character, then you need to hit the "n" key twice.

No, I've only ever used the QWERTY layout. I don't type in Japanese often enough/long enough to make learning a new keyboard layout worthwhile.

Yes, it's perfectly fine. Try to pick up the vocab, but don't go out of your way to memorise it. Tae Kim and Genki both use way too many new words for a beginner. Rikaisama is your friend.

Once you've done Tae Kim or Genki, I'd recommend getting one of the Core decks from the CoR and doing it alongside the DOJG deck (suspend either the recognition cards or the cloze cards in the DOJG deck - I recommend suspending the recognition cards).

Once you get to the end of the DOJG deck, you can then drop Core and start mining vocabulary. If you did the DOJG deck at a pace of 5 cards a day, and the Core deck at a pace of 20 cards a day, you should know 2500 words and probably somewhere around 1000 kanji which will help a lot when you start reading.

Yeah I got to the point where it feels like so much vocab is just being dumped in my face all of a sudden. I felt like using rikaikun was cheating and that I should try my best to actually memorize everything. Guess I should give myself more leeway.

Tae Kim talks about that in this blog post:
http://www.guidetojapanese.org/blog/2008/01/31/final-thoughts-on-remembering-the-kanji/

>Before I talk about the book, I think it’s worthwhile to discuss how I learned kanji in order to have an alternative method to compare against. I may have mentioned this before but I never studied kanji; I studied the words that are made from kanji. For instance, I learned 「力」 as 「ちから」 but never as 「リョク」 or 「リキ」. I only learned the other on-yomi when I learned words like 「努力」 and 「怪力」. The key to learning these words is, of course, reading. Therefore, it’s very important to find reading material that is interesting and appropriate for your level, something that is a lot harder than it should be.

This is the method which most people in these threads use, I believe.
>>
>>140747626
Thanks for that. So it basically becomes getting used to the different readings as you get more experienced and exposed to the different words out there.
>>
>>140747626
>This is the method which most people in these threads use, I believe.
Doubt it. While Kim has a decent grammar guide, I wouldn't put any stock on his opinions on kanji. We have had a few anons come through who have learned Japanese to a high level who did entirely the opposite of the likes of which is mentioned.
>>
>>140747603
>I felt like using rikaikun was cheating and that I should try my best to actually memorize everything.
The purpose of a grammar guide, at the end of the day, is to teach you grammar. Both Tae Kim's guide and the Genki textbook have seriously unrealistic expectations of how many new words a beginner can pick up and be comfortable with in the space of a day.

So long as you're picking up the grammatical principles, that's the important thing. Get through whatever grammar guide you're using, then worry about learning vocab.
>>
>>140747759
Basically. The easiest way to learn readings is by learning words which use them since it gives your brain a meaningful context for the sounds. The more words you learn with a particular reading, the more that reading will be cemented into your memory.
>>
>>140747769
What method do you advocate? RTK/mnemonics?

>>
So I just started but I'm a bit confused already. Katakana are like uppercase hiragana, right?
>>
>>140748051
Katakana is for loan words.

Japanese is shit by the way. What a waste of time.
>>
>>140748051
No, it's just a parallel syllabary, how can katakana be uppercase hiragana if it's so different?
>>
>>140747626
Personally, I tried this the first time I learned Japanese years ago, and never got too far. Recently though I started again and have been trying to learn the kanji/readings at more or less the same time that I learn the words that use those kanji, and I find it is MUCH easier to remember them this way. I wouldn't suggest putting a lot of time into learning ONLY kanji, since that will be tedious and not very useful for a long time, but learning them alongside the words that use them is probably the most beneficial.
>>
>>140748118
Uppercase letters don't have to look like their lowercase variant... Take g/G, a/A, or h/H for example.
>>
>>140748112
i can tell youre serious and not just making a troll post and all i can say to you is yes i agree

i dont know what some of these kids problems are trying to learn japanese for third rate picture books
>>
>>140748132
To clarify what I mean is like, learn a batch of kanji, then learn a big batch of words using only those kanji, learn more kanji, then learn more vocab using your now larger base of kanji, etc. I find everything sticks in your mind much better this way and feels more intuitive than if you just tried to memorize words without putting any thought into the individual kanji. I definitely wouldn't recommend grinding kanji alone in a huge block before even starting vocab though, since for one that's kind of overkill and also by doing this you put way too much time between learning the kanji and applying it to actual words/sentences so it's not likely to stick as well.
>>
>>140748051
Katakana are primarily used for loan words and at times you'll see the katakana over hiragana if it's being emphasized I believe.
>>
can anyone translate this for me?

>DWの時計は流行る前から持ってたのに今みんなしてる

Is the translation: "Everyone now has a DW watch since it came into fashion."
>>
>>140748165
They still look very similar unlike hiragana and katakana and one is clearly larger than the other so it's a pretty stupid comparison.
>>
>>140748318

RTK/mnemonics, learning readings, etc. whatever works. Adding kanji study to the rest of your study regime helps overall and the time investment is relatively short overall in that by the time you have learned a few thousand kanji, you will have learned thousands more words and still have a handful of years to go in terms of vocab before it starts to become comfortable in some ways similar to your native/dominant language.

I am of the opinion that studying kanji alongside studying vocabulary is just as important as studying grammar alongside reading.

That comes as a part of using the language. There are ways to structure aspects of it, such as speaking practice, etc. but it is hard to replicate in a manner of isolated study that competes with the value of interacting with actual people, be it textually or spoken/in-person.

It is sort of a given that people want to use something they have learned, regardless of what anons may say to the contrary.
