Anyway onto crests and stuff. Turns out those two Edelfelt sisters you got in this here image actually have a magic trait called 'Ore scales' which basically allows them to make a duplicate crest every generation. So instead of having only one capable heir there can actually be two.

In most circumstances any extra child besides firstborn will not learn how to use magic at all. In these cases it is possible for the child to be adopted into a family that is incapable of producing an heir (due to sperm or egg problems. Homosexuality is highly frowned upon in magus society due to the need for the heir to be of the same blood.) to continue their magic, or into a family where their magic circuits are dwindling and a booster needs to be brought in for breeding purposes mostly except in Sakura Matou's case where magic circuits have ceased entirely in the Makiri bloodline and she must have the crest implanted into her body via Zouken's crest worms and learn their magic to pass on.
