Have you ever forgotten how good an anime was until you watched it again? Haruhi outclasses almost all of the popular anime on /a/ today including monogatori and I'm a fan of most of these "popular" shows. The movie was especially great and from a reviewers standpoint almost flawless. What does Haruhi have that a lot of modern anime are missing?

I rewatch anime that I first watched back when I was a newfag and sometimes I get blown away by how good it was when I previously thought it was just okay.
Haruhi is one. The TV anime was amazing and the movie was even better. Tamako Market was another anime I fell in love with after a rewatch. Both became my favorite anime pretty quickly.

yeah but Nadeko's personality didn't really "flip", just the illusion of her "fake" personality broke down once there was nothing left to support it, leaving her "true" personality in full view
watch Nadeko Snake again, there's lots of foreshadowing for Otori.
Having said all that Haruhi will remain the comfiest show ever
Hopefully we get more Tsuruya in the next book, if it ever comes out

I've yet to check out monogatari, was just commenting on the general idea people seem to have of "good character development", which seems to be synonymous with "drastic and forced".
The "her fake personality just fell of like a cloak and the person suddenly becomes his true self" that you're describing sounds like the kind of shit I usually can't stand but I can't comment on that since I haven't checked out the series. My only exposure to nisio's writing so far has been Katanagatari which I quite enjoyed.

A season three would genuinely make me excited for an anime, something I've not felt about anime in a long time. Also the other characters have loads of great development which isn't sudden but built up over lots of arcs

Odds are it will happen eventually. Yuki-Nagato demonstrates that Haruhi is still a valuable property and guaranteed to return investment. The only reason they've held out this long is because a new season will be significantly more valuable if it cross-promotes a new book.
Tanigawa isn't unreasonable, and Kadokawa doesn't have infinite patience; if he really hadn't done any work at all on a new book in the past five years, they wouldn't have waited this long.

The reality is Japan doesn't really care about Haruhi anymore. People see it and think, "oh yeah, I remember that" not "S3 when". I imagine by now, anyone who would have wanted to buy the LNs would have bought them already, so the market is saturated. Haruhi is no where near as popular as it used to be.
Basically what I'm saying is that S3 will never happen, it's pretty much impossible.
