How far did the Anime go? Tried watching the first ~15 episodes but the terrible ost and lackluster direction put me off, would still be interested in the arch fight or even lvl 4 if that much is adapted.

Alma and Kanda are recycled Exorcists who were dead and got revived by having their soul placed inside and almost immortal body.
Alma wanted to killed everyone involved, including Kanda and himself because he thought if he hadn't done that, the Black Order wouldn't realize their mistake and just continue inhumane experiments. At this point, he still didn't regconize Kanda to be "her" husbando.
Kanda, however, wanted to find his waifu. In order to do that, he first must survive Alma's rage. Therefore, he fought a fight to the death with Alma, unknowing of Alma being his waifu.
9 years later, with the help from the Noah, Alma learned of the truth behind all the tragedies of the 2nd Exorcist project, including him being the person Kanda would kill to look for.
Aside from his original goal, Alma couldn't stand the fact that Kanda had lived 9 years meaninglessly. This added more reasons for Alma to bring Kanda down with him, to allow Kanda to die knowing nothing of the painful truth.
