So this show is pretty much considered one of the "great" anime, and i really don't understand why. It is alright, but doesnt seem to be a masterpiece or anything.

The best anime ever, without any doubt, is Evangelion. Not only is the plot amazing, it delivers important themes about society and has a lot of symbols about religion. Pisses me off that people don't understand how beautiful this anime is and I just want to punch them in the face.

Characters aren't just 2-dimensional caricatures but actually act and change like real people. They are flawed and are extremely relateable for a lot of people.
It's "original", taking influence from all over the place creating a somewhat unique atmosphere.
It's really honest. It's message about escapism and human life, while not really subtle, is handled really well (Instrumentality is a beautiful metaphor). It's not 2deep4u like some people pretend.

The Buff Clan is to "evil" if you ask me. They even get an offered to trade the Ideon and Solo ship for a new ship, but they have to promise to stop the attacks. They fucking decline.

I consider it a deconstruction of not just the mecha genre, but also of the overuse of symbolism, considering that Anno has gone on record saying that he was just using imagery he thought looked good rather than their having symbolic value. Hell, the name "Neon Genesis Evangelion" was just a bunch of words he thought sounded good. It's a lot less deep than a lot of people think it is, but it has some depth.

Reminder that Neon Genesis Evangelion is just an autistic worse version of Mobile Suit Gundam and Space Runaway Ideon. Anyone who says it is a "deconstruction" has only seen less than 10 other animes, all of which were made after 2000. Everything that Evangelion is known for was done better 15 years earlier by the master Tomino. The only reason Eva became popular is because it pandered more to pervert pedophiles (most anime fans, especially /a/.) Evangelion is the go-to anime for newfag plebs.
