Why cant anime be spooky?
>>
because instead of going for the atmospheric approach, a lot of anime decide to go for over the top gore to get their point across instead
>>

Have you bothered to watch the source of your Gif?

Because most anime in manga adaptions these days, and manga isnt scary.

Horror as a whole is pretty much dead, the games, the films, the books, etc. All we get is shitty jumpscares.

On the topic, just incase someone hasnt seen it, dont fall for the babadook memes, it's shit and most of the film is an autistic child screaming.
>tfw videogame and movie horror is now just jumpscares
Seriously OP, what chance does anime ahve when everything else is fucked? Anime doesnt take risks anymore.

Spoiler for extra spooky.

>>140635433
Junji Ito is pretty scary, but more for the themes he uses than anything else, like Long Dream still haunt me till this days.
>>
>>140635427
Fucked up =/= horror.
Same with shit like Gyo and Uzumaki, it wasnt scary just gross.
>>
>>140635597
most fucked up is horror but not all horror is fucked up. you've gone and fucked up

Well, somebody dint watch ARRIVAL OF FEAR
>>
Some episodes of Aria are pretty spooky.
>>
>>140635597
For something to be really scare, you've got to put yourself in the victim's shoes for a little while. Midori's situation is pretty terrifying once you do that.
>>
>>140635669
> Aria
> spooky
I dont think you understand the meaning of spooky
>>
>>140635645
I never implied all horror is fucked up.
>Most fucked up is horror
Guro
Hardocre Sadomasochism
Tortureporn films like Saw (classed as horror, but people just wanted to see people die horrible deaths)
Gore threads

All fucked up, none are looked at to experience fear. There is more to horror than mindless violence and rape, which is all I remember from Midori. Fuck people enjoy violence, it's in films and videogames and entertains millions and earns billions.
>>
>>140635649
S2 for extra spooky.

>you've got to put yourself in the victim's shoes for a little while
I havent got to do anything. If I have to act a certain way, then it failed. It should get me into the correct mindset without me making a conscious effort.
>>
>>140635868
>I never implied all horror is fucked up.
No, you said fucked up cannot be horror.
>Fucked up =/= horror.
If you're going to say things, make sure you mean them
>>
>>140635945
No, you are just retarded and twisting words.
I didnt say fucked up cant be horror, but alone fucked up cant be horror.

Or do you get the same experience seeing scat/gore posted, as you do watching The Thing or playing SIlent Hill?
>>
Most horror works through lack of information (e.g.: bad camera angles, dark places that hide identities). The human is naturally afraid of that which it cannot understand. Most good horror writings take this approach, then there are several directions where you can branch into, some more specific than others, you could call them "fetishes" if you will.

These "fetishes", naturally deal with very specific things, like people melting, sadism, mutilation, gore. The Hellraiser movie is a good example since it manages to fit in a couple of these flavours.

The reason as to why anime doesn't really work well with horror is because, as the name implies, it's all about the movement (unless you're SHAFT), so much of the "horror" aspect is channeled in secondary branches like the ones stated above. Anime like Blood C++(? I'm not sure on the name) deal with copious amounts of gore because it's gut wrenching and all that.

I've been watching Shiki this week and although it's labeled as horror, there's not much, unless you're really afraid of zombies.

But yeah, long story short, anime is really not a good medium to translate horror into, it lacks a couple atmospheric tools and in general it's really underwhelming even if you're a chicken.

Books work best because they force you to imagine the events described. Read King, or Lovecraft, good spooky shit.

If you say so. Frankly, I feel that a horror movie that doesn't squeeze out something kind of effort from the audience isn't worth much.

I don't think animation in general can be spooky. The closest Iv come to experience fear has been The Second Renaissance but even that was more unsettling than fear. Once we get VR though
>>
Good horror, more than any other genre, needs to draw you into the experience. Nearly impossible to do in anime thanks to stylization and cheap animation. Best you can hope for is some high budget anime movie, but even then it'll pale in comparison to a film or novel. It's a lost cause, no point.

Try mononoke (not the hime one). It is not scary but spooky.

Also check Ayakashi: Japanese Horror Stories

Call me pleb but reading Amigara Fault for the first time spooked me good.

Some old weird cartoon manage to scare me before
>>
>>140636953
Old things manage to do that I've noticed, there's this half life 1 mod that looks really bad, the graphics and animations actually make it scarier than it would be otherwise, perhaps it's the same with cartoons?

Honestly the twitchy animations and overuse of jump scares prevented me from finding CoF scary.
The co-op is just comedy gold, though. Going full police brutality on weird zombie shit is great.
>>
>>140637466
I guess it's a matter of opinion then, for me at least, horror ala CoF or early Silent Hill works better because of the nasty graphics.
>>
>>140636205
I havent been scared by books at all.
I also find lovecraft overrated, his stuff is jsut "Wow this thins is really scary guys, I cant even describe it, it's just insane".

My favourite story of his was Polaris, which now I am talking about it, I will say it's probably the only story that scared me. It wasnt regular fear, but just reminding me of how unnerving the world is when you cant really prove something is real.

>>140636817
Amigara was creepy but never got a full scare. You know, it had the atmosphere and buildup but no punch.
I would also argue he fucked up by doing two things. First he explained the origin of the holes (in a retarded manner, fucking cavemen), then he kept on drawing. It should have ended with the guy horrified that something alive was inside the hole. He shoudltn ahve shown us anything, especially with a retarded sound.

I still think videogames are the best for horror. They are amazing for immersion and a they ar einteractive, they puyt you in the soes of the protaganist. It's a damn shame videogame horror is now FNAF jumpscares, and walking simulators (with hiding in corners). AMnesia was a nice change, but it's now overstayed it's welcome.
Fatal Frame 5 was shit too. All I have left to hope for now, is Pathologic's remake, which now has lucid dreams added. Nightcry was apparently shit too, what a shame.
>>
>>140637588
The first 3 silent hill is pretty spooky but the rest is just meh. I personally like Fatal frame series desu
>>
>>140637865
>I personally like Fatal frame series desu
The first 3 Fatal Frame is pretty spooky but the rest is just meh.

Why no Fatal Frame anime adaption btw?
Almost all protaganists are cute girls.
>>
>ctrl+f perfect blue

/a/ has shit taste
>>
because no one ever bothered to make truly spooky anime, with the right artstyle and the right directing you could easily make some really crazy stuff
>>
>>140639626
Perfect Blue is a masterpiece (Black Swan a shit) but I didnt find it horrifying. I enjoy watching psychological films where protaganists crack under pressure, they dont scare me however.
>>
>>140635427
This movie fucking blew. It was so goddamn bad. Seriously just the most blatant unwatchable gore porn I've ever seen. Gore doesn't even bother me, but Midori was just so retarded on the whole that it left a bad taste in my mouth.
