Why are doujin covers so misleading?
Every now and then there's that really atrocious looking cover that ends up actually being amazing.
Comiket is fast-paced, they have to hook the average otaku on the cover alone. The buyers aren't going to flick through the comic and decide if it's worth the 800 yen when they could be using that time to look at Kancolle figures or something.

I head to read that based on the puffiness alone, but there are definitely better Dog Days books out there, but not many good ones with Nanami.
The way I see it, the number one thing that the artists should not do a bad job on is the cover since it is pretty much the one thing that advertises the rest of the book.
If they can't pull out all the stops and make the cover look amazing, you know the contents are shit.
Even if a cover was shit but the contents were amazing, nobody would ever know because nobody would open it up and read it since they would just assume the artist can't draw.
I just wish it was easier to know which ones were full-color just by the cover alone since full-color doujins really make a big difference.

Not at the comiket I went to. All the good selling tables have customers impatient to buy as fast as possible so they can move on to the next seller. If you stand there leafing thru things, you hold up the people behind you. Yeah, you are american and therefore say "LOL Who Cares, I won't see them again and have to deal with their anger."
Now, if you have been there, you'll quickly say there are sellers at many areas that don't have many buyers where you can leaf thru. But I say you are making the doujin "used" with your grubby hands and no one appreciates that. And you counter with how at stores, you feel you have the right to open a box to peek inside and even pull out a sample of product before then buying an unopened box. You are self-entitled to that because you are american. It's your right to do so to the doujin seller.

Why is it misleading? The cover features the same people who are in the video so it's not bait and switch to different people.
Hollywood movie quality touchup editing of each frame in the movie uses up a lot of time and even if it cost zero yen to do so, the overall profits would be far less --> take net profit from the sales and divide by the number of days it took to create the final product. Your movie editing touchups frame by frame would cause the video to take many more days before it could make it out the door to be sold. Thus the amount of yen earned per day is drastically less. Why do that for a disposable COMMODITY product in a flooded market?

JAV covers are heavily edited. One brand especially is known to give considerable breast size upgrades to the girls in the cover.

Isn't it almost given that 90% of works which have two girls on the cover in suggestive blushing pose together are not yuri related at all and it's almost gangbang/threesome action?

I remember that in the past some doujin artists specially added a 'female x female" gender sign to their works so people would know what they buy.
