The anime did a much better job than the manga at selling the cringe.
Reading the same parts in the manga afterwards just paled in comparisons. The art direction just looks so much better and much more hateful in the anime. Tomoko is a lot uglier, the VA is absolutely great.
I'd say read the manga if you care more about humor.
Personally I derived intense pleasure in seeing tomoko be a shitty person and receive shit in return so I preferred the anime adaptation.
The current manga now is hardly at all the same manga. Although it is pretty funny in its own right, just not the same way.
