PSME plays mostly in modern Japan. However the old lives have a long arc later too. It's a very good manga.

Yes but the setting makes that more interesting then you might think. The back drop is increasing Russian encroachment into Central Asia with the various tribes reacting to that threat as well as other sorts of tribal politics which is also interesting when the manga occasionally decides to bring that back into focus.
It also shifts focus from the main couple, Amir and Karluk, to other couples who are entering some form of traditional marriage.
