When and how do I know if I should increase my load in Anki?

Nice meme.

>>140563873
I'm new and I can't tell if this is just a thoughtless shitpost or not.

Is there a better alternative?
>>
>>140563924
Not for vocabulary.
>>
>>140563924
If you're new anki is fine, but it becomes counter productive later on. THere is no alternative. The alternative is reading lots instead.
>>
>>140563838
With decent retention and default ease you should expect roughly 10-12x the number of new cards you're doing in reviews after a while. Just do as many as you think you can handle the reviews for no matter what (i.e. even if you have a shitty day / busy week or something, you'll still be able to manage them fine) and make sure you're spending much more time on reading than you are on anki.

When you finish kanji - in the sense that next to new words you learn have new kanji - the sky's your limit. I went from 10 new cards a day learning new kanji, to 40 new cards a day learning no new kanji, and shit was so cash. Didn't even sweat the change. So when you finish kanji, that's a big sign to up your anki load.

My daily schedule is:
40 words - Core10k, recognition.
20 kanji - personal deck, keyword/readings to kanji, production.
20 kanji - same personal deck only kanji to 音/訓 readings.
15 grammar points - DoJG deck, recognition.
15 grammar points - DoJG deck, same concepts, cloze delete.

Pic related is roughly how long it takes on average.
>>
>>140564339
Well, I made sure to keep anki below 30 minutes a day, but if thats not a problem for you then you could easily do 100 new cards a day after kanji. My anki only takes 20 minutes @ 40 new cards a day.

I did 200 DOJG cards in one day, so that deck was barely any time at all.

But anyway, I can't tell quite what you mean from "personal deck". If you put kanji you see while reading into it, you're good. If not, then you should start, I don't even think Core10k has "enough" kanji.

Can't be arsed doing that. This kanji deck has over 6,000 kanji and I've ordered them by frequency using the data from the Core10k, the rest after the 2091 kanji in Core10k are basic frequency order.

How in the hell is 40 new words a day only 20 minutes. Doing core 2k it's at least 2 hours for 50, but of course I just started so I have a lot of short term cards. Also my pass rate is below 50%. I assume it gets much worse and then easier later on.

When you know kanji very well and can read them on sight (aka not doing core2k) then your speed jump will be incredibly high for learning vocabulary. Right now you're learning both kanji AND vocabulary which is why it's taking so long.

If you did a vocabulary deck in English you'd know what I mean.
>>
>>140565224
No, kanji are literally useless didn't you get the memo?
>>
>>140565152
I will give it a try.
>>
>>140565264
Going through a LOGH deck has really hit home how beneficial kanji are, there's a ton of words I never have seen in anki or reading but know simply because of kanji. It's very convenient. Though, if I heard them in an anime or something I probably wouldn't recognize it easily.
>>
>Why learn Japanese when everything good gets translated already?
What other funny EOP excuses have you seen?
>>
>>140563838
Honestly the only real limit when it comes to Anki is how much time you can/are interested in spending on it. If you have the time required and want to do more, go for it. Though of course you would want to make sure your Anki/native materials ratio stays favorable.

Either they know most of the words well already or they're skipping enough days that their "true"/average new words per day is actually lower.

Google seems to think I'm Japanese and most pages that use their analytics switch to nip now for me. I don't think it's made much difference, websites like that don't use that many words in the first place.
>>
>>140565581
LOGH deck is 15,000 words. Of the first 4,000, I didn't know 500 or so. What do you think I'm going to do, go through 3,500 cards I know already? That'd be a huge waste of time and effort. Even just pressing "easy".
>>140565617
Nah. I just use both sites. It helps in that every bit of exposure to Japanese helps but it's not a big deal. If you're still at the level of struggling to use Japanese websites then reading a book would be equivalently useful.

The DOJG says the 思って ellipsis with と (in the usage of creating an adverbial phrase) is only possible with expressions of volition or conjecture (volitional form or だろう, かもしれない). It specifically has an example that the ellipsis cannot occur with たい (pic related, 3. (5)).

Is this rule always followed? In the lyrics of innocent starter, namely the following bit
>「アタリマエ」とか「普通」の中に 飾らずある幸せを
>守れる力 手に入れたいと
>まっすぐ 現在を生きてく
is と not marking an adverbial phrase? It seems to be the only usage that makes sense. Or is this is just a case of lyrics being exceedingly liberal with grammar and not representative of regular usage?

>>
>>140566218
Not a comment on the overall but something I wanted to isolate:
>In the lyrics
Songs often use a fair bit of creative license with their structuring. I wouldn't take something like that as being representative of regular usage. Better to keep it in mind as at least one other way it has been used and let it float around in your head to pile up with other usages you eventually come across.

You have to remember that the DoJG is set out to instruct what is technically accepted as being "correct usage" and that real world usage will have personal idiosyncratic deviation and creative works like song lyrics, poetry, etc. have a higher propensity for playing with structure and meaning because they are mostly not aimed at reflecting conversational or straightforward spoken/written communication.
>>
>>140566218
In my experience 思う or 言う can almost always be dropped. Dunno if it's "correct" though.

What is your definition of "finishing" a VN? Do you read every route or do you just read one route and then drop it even if that route is byfar the worst route? If the latter, do you document how many out of the total amount of routes you read through? Since common route + one route is still less than half the VN most of the time.
>>
>>140568355
This isn't a list of VNs I've finished, it's a list of VNs I read. I'd like to start by saying this isn't a dick waving list, it's a personal record, so my intention isn't to.... compare to others and say I've read more. From the start, that's a foolish endeavor. That Kyokon Tensei game is probably 1/10th of the size of other VNs I've read, for example. With that out of the way...

... yes, I document which routes I read. That's the second bit (Title - amount read - notes - date). "Princess" indicates I read the princess section of the game. Other such tags include "common route". Sometimes I read every route, sometimes I don't read any of them (moege are particularly famous for having good common routes but awful character routes). However, I don't record a game if I just read like 100-200 lines in then dropped it. I only record it if I read a significant amount of the game, significant enough for me to want to remember it. VNs are always way longer than books so even half the common route or something would be equivalent to a full book.

Prolly wouldn't recommend it as first VN (Use Flyable Heart and/or Axanael for that), but it's a solid choice for a 2nd VN.

At first I was having trouble getting this, but I think I get it now. Does Japanese have no specific "would have been" conjugation, so the 「見捨てれば」 itself, paired with the 「私といい勝負だったのに」 past conjugation, implies the "would have been" structure in English?

So

I have never seen "take a goose" ever in my life and I think it's ridiculous to call it a common phrase. "Take a gander" is, and thus the play on words is fairly apparent, but the only commotion going on is backlash from you claiming that "take a goose" is common, which it's not.

I'm not calling out anyone, anon. It should be painfully obvious what it meant. An appeal to "commonality" is pretty fucking dense: it should be blindingly obvious.

This is just ridiculous. People are getting carried away over a simple phrase that shouldn't have batted an eyelid. Better not use anything but standard American English phraseology which has millions of google search results or the uncreative anons will start panicking. Better ignore anything that isn't discernible from an AI bot.

Need a bit of help with the second part of this paragraph:

「人類の、その無数の個体の中から、ごくわずかに、強力な魔力を持つ者が生まれることがある。その者は、人類という種族全体の持つ魔力の焦点となる力を持つのだ」

I understand that "人類の、その無数の個体の中から、ごくわずかに、強力な魔力を持つ者が生まれることがある " - means that "among the human (species) there was a minuscule number of humans born with great magical power."

But for some reason I can't really grasp what the second sentence "その者は、人類という種族全体の持つ魔力の焦点となる力を持つのだ " mean at all?
"These people became the focus point among all the people having magical power"?
>>
>>140577571
what do you think 焦点となる力 is talking about here dude
>>
>>140577983
The (rather long) paragraph before was talking about a large number of species with low power banding together, so perhaps its about that.

Honestly I don't really understand how to read the whole second sentence
その者 - these people
人類という種族 - the human clan

And after that its sort of a dark wood for me...

Yeah, just "listening to raws" doesn't work. You need to also know what they're supposed to be saying so you can match sounds to words. Basically, you need to use material that has scripts available.

For anime:
Go to kitsunekko.net, or captions.leafgreen.org.

These are repositories of closed captions (for deaf japs). Read along with them (or, if you know how to use Aegisub, you can timeshift them with a single command, then use them as actual subs in your movie player).

Dramas / Movies:
d-addicts.net has lots of subs, same thing.

Last but not least are learning resources.. most readers and learning sites (e.g. jpod101, 90%+ of which is in the CoR) have full scripts you can basically read along to while you listen.

>>140578282

Alright, i decided, fuck that smug bitch, i want to learn japanese.

The most i know is the kana and even then since the last time i took japanese a few years ago even thats beginning to fade from memory. Im tired of having to wait for tls and never evers.

Where exactly should I begin? Practice the kana again until i can read kana naturally? Learn grammar and words/phrases alongside kana so that I can better attribute meaning to memory? And what of kanji? That shit was what held me back from learning, but since im graduating soon and gonna have some more time on my hands i figure i might as well put it to more productive use.

I'm trying to play a DS Mahjong game and this shit is filled with unrecognizable kanji, holy shit. I managed to find every single kanji in the game so far on Jisho, but those two on the bottom, to the left, are on a whole new level. Can the nips even read those pixelated scribbles? Anyway, I don't expect anyone here to find them for me or anything, I just wanted to give context to my question:

In that part of the text before the scribbles, 「これまでの対局の詳細やアガった役を」, I assume that 「アガった」 comes from 和がる, but why is it written in katakana then? It isn't a foreign word and it doesn't look like the text is emphasizing anything.
