I reread the manga last week and after watching the most recent episode I can tell you that the tone is completely different, and there's so much dialogue that gets cut for shounen tier action and QUALITY animation that it's a joke. I'm not arguing that season 1 was an absolutely perfect adaptation, but it's way ahead of season 2. Season 2 has hardly explained any animal powers, the designs are shit, and it's full of quality, not to mention that several pieces of important dialogue have been cut altogether. I just can't see how anyone would think this is better, even without mentioning all of the SD jokey crap that still misses the tone of the manga by miles, even if it is more lighthearted than season 1.

I still think the only reason that it felt that way was because of how S1 just took us straight into the action out of time constraints (cutting out a lot Adolf's "IIHH REEB DIHHH," the Mexicans' backstories, etc.,). You can tell they tried to make up for it by dedicating most of episode 2 to light-hearted moments and adapted a lot of them panel for panel.
They still kept funny moments between characters between fights, like with Akari and Michelle, and even in a lot of the grimdark scenes that got intensified by all the edgy filters (the spine sword scene comes to mind) ended up being so ridiculously over the top you can tell they weren't taking themselves all that seriously. This applied every time the series hit a hype/holy shit moment and CG cockroaches started being crosscut with the actual terraformers approaching.
Still is a bit confusing that they took out basically all of Adolf's moe and made Kanako cold and bloodthirsty until the last two episodes or something.

The roaches were gone completely for 2,5 episodes. They couldn't have kept the grim up for all that time.
The characters also went to sleep a bunch of times. It wouldn't feel right in a dark setting, but here it does.

It's really how the manga reads, though. The tone can go all over the place.
That being said I appreciate season 1 for being a lot more confident about delivering the light-hearted moments even if its aesthetic suggests otherwise; they didn't really have to resort to SD bubbles, slow panning fanservice shots, and over-exaggerated sweat drops like S2 does.
I don't want to keep shitting on S2 though. They seem to be doing a better job each episode and Hong is moe.
