He's not retarded for being critical of his own work. Do you know why an artist is the worst judge of their work? Because they know their work better than anyone else, and they can see even the most subtle differences in drawings just a year or two apart that maybe a viewer wouldn't--yes, even viewers that are artists themselves. Imagine how Nihei must feel looking at art from a decade or more ago.
It's fine if you prefer his old stuff, but undermining him as an artist because you don't like what he does know is insulting, and just makes you come off as entitled instead of appreciative of the stuff you DO like.

You are automatically your worst critic - worst meaning most ineffective and inaccurate. Ask any artist, no matter how acclaimed or dignified, and they will whine and bitch and complain about how their work is shit. James Joyce, Mamoru Oshii, Dostoyevsky, Franco Corelli, van Gogh - all of these people had/have negative things to say about virtually all of their own works. Unlike Nihei, the majority of all artists - the above included - can recognize that it's not actually shit, they just perceive it as that because they're the creator, and continue to make whatever it is they want.
More often than not, an artist's body of work is determined by the viewers' responses. Not in the sense of "positive or negative", but in more detailed qualifications. Mangum does not want to create another album because he believes that the songs are more than 'his' now. Again, determined by viewer response. Nihei refuses to adhere to that, and just does what he thinks is right based solely on his opinion. Hate to tell you (and him) this, but a thousand people telling one person that x is bad means far more than that one person telling themselves that x is bad. If you disagree with that, you can go to hell and chat it up with Milton Babbitt for a fiery eternity.

Storywise, he said he was tired of relatives and friends telling him they didn't understand what he wrote, so he gradually dumbed down his works hoping to be understood.
Drawingwise yeah, he said that he was tired of all those dark tones and felt that lighter tones would fit better a story like Sidonia.
He also joked about saving money because of the less ink.
