But if you have a photo of (what appears to be) the possessed medium holding the weapon and testimony suggesting it was the spirit taking revenge for something, wouldn't that be a fairly compelling case? I'm not familiar with japanese law but almost all the stuff they do in this for evidence would be tossed out in the US court or deemed illegal and worthy of prosecution in itself.

AA's legal system is meant to be an exaggerated parody of Japan's. It's set in the near future (well, AA1 is actually meant to happen this year but it was the near future in 2001) where the legal rules got thrown out the window, trials last a maximum of three days and anything goes. Evidence law is actually a major plot point in the game's 5th case, and they have two rules. It must be approved by the police and/or relevant to the case at hand. That's it.

DD is fine story wise (though it does get a little corny "power of friendship" at the end), the problem is that the game leads you by the hand and is piss easy, the characters practically tell you what to do.
For example in the older games the hardest parts were the investigation sections where you didn't know if you had all the items and what to show who, but in DD it's just totally linear with "Look in this room! What's that? Maybe we should ask ___ about it!"
