As I say, it is entirely allowed in the Ninja world to do horrible dangerous shit to your own children. Most people's object to Oro' experiments come from him grabbing unwilling test subject outside his own family.
Look at it another way, Shino has bugs living inside his body. I doubt he was born like that. What kind of crazy shit did his parents do to implant the bugs into him? Did he ever had a say? Doubt it. You can do anything, absolutely ANYTHING, to your own children. And the Naruto world would just leave that as a private matter.

Both of the Gaidens involved a plot heavily centered on clones and how people perceive them. I'd be disappointed if this doesn't weave itself into the plot later on. Maybe the early villains will be clones/experiments before the ayyliens show up.

Funny enough, there is actally a Alchemical mythology that explains what happened with Oro, namely that in order to achieve true immortality, specifically through the elixir of life, one suppose side effect is that the person become a "perfect human", and that means losing one's gender entirely or becoming both man and woman.
