Even though it becomes objectively less good, it's still a great time. Considering that it's all in constraints of one story it's nice to see our man Guts get healing and recognition in some form. Sure, now it's more of a powertripping fantasy story but it still works thanks to it's roots and overall sense of doom that lies over Guts.
The whole work is great because it's got everything right: themes, characters, overall plot, conflict, lore, atmosphere, worldbuilding and shitton of cool moments.

All of Griffiths problems stem from the fact that he's an arrogant asshole. Literally one person tells hims "no" and her gets massively butthurt and he throws it all away. The lost children/elf arc was even more unsettling.
Watching a guy fight monsters that range from typical dragon shit to eldrich horrors to chimera-esc abominations is fun. Guts as a character isn't insanely interesting but he's oddly relateable and he's just strong enough that it's fun to do the schoolyard

Golden Age was superb because Guts and Griffith were a fantastic characters. When the plot moved away from that, it just, inevitably slipped from that peak.
I don't blame Miura. I can't think of a better way to have done it, save just wrapping everything up in the following arc. All in all he kept things pretty good as he had to think up ways to keep dragging the story onwards. There are innumerable examples of anime and manga that tried to do the same thing, and just turned into complete shit.

Guts is what makes berserk good. He is one of the most interesting main character that I have ever seen. We follow guts trough his rough and abusive childhood, his somewhat happier and adventurous teenage years with the hawks, his quest to find his true purpose in life, the tragedy and his transformation into an bloodthirsty avenger, leading up to his current repentance and his transformation into a mentor/father figure, who is still hunted by the demons of his past. Even when guts is at his lowest point, he is still sympathetic and relatable. He is a character that suffers but still gets back up. At one point, he is not even human anymore, he only fights for hate and revenge. But then we get to see him regain his humanity, his trust in others, and instead of hate, he now fights for love. That's one hell of a character arc.
Also, the themes and other characters are also really great. And even the edginess doesn't bother me, since the story and the characters are good. The fantasia arc and the hiatuses are somewhat of a disappointment, but I believe that when we reach the final arc, berserk will get great again.

This. I love how all of the events in his life influence and determine his behavior. He is uncomfortable with intimacy save for a few people because of the sexual abuse he suffered as a child. His dysfunctional relationships with the people who raised him make him hard to get close to and while he may be a caring and loyal friend, he is less than perfect as he never realized that griffith cared for him as a friend more than he let on and that he almost left behind the last worthwhile thing he had in his life,casca, for vengeance. Guts also seems to be able to understand others well enough when he really wants to as he was able to understand the relationship between griffith and his hawks so well.

1. While the stories may be famous, even Isidro mentions how great the leader of raiders was, not many know how he looks like, save from some noblemen.
2. The entire band was branded criminals after their relatively short time amongst the nobility. How long was it? Guts was there 3 years, so they served under the king for how long, 2 years? I don't think that's long enough to be so recognisable.

Not that it's a bad manga at all, but I certainly don't think it's incredible, and it certainly attracts a bunch of low power-level people who think it's the absolute best thing ever and that barely anything else is worth reading. It's got a level of visibility that basically no other seinen has on the English-language web (maybe Punpun has recently come close), and that doesn't exactly help your fanbase's quality.

I don't think many more knew about him, since it was treated like made up stories, mostly. Also, remember how confused the Farnese unit was when they found bodies left by him?
