If you re-read the early chapters, right from chapter 1 shows he knows how to draw proper horses, especially chapter 1 where it's pretty much spot on even if his art sucks.
So the change is intentional, and while this is nothing more than anecdotal evidence, Hara's Kingdom was close to cancellation until he approached Inoue of Vagabond, got some pointers, and started changing his drawing style which is roughly around when the first war with Wei and the debut of Duke Hyou is. Popularity skyrocketed afterwards and in these recent years went from beating out Toriko to as I've said, placing 5th in the media sales.

The art actually plays a big part in some of the smaller story telling elements. For example if you compare Shin pre-time skip to post-time skip, you'll notice a huge difference during the combat pages. Shin with the king's sword is able to cleave through people like a hot knife through butter unless it's a real stronk opponent, but glaive Shin despite being a much more powerful individual only wounds people and practically uses his weapon like a baseball bat no different than the mace users. In fact, all the mace users like Moubu have better 'carving' and fatal blow abilities, as shown by Zenno.
Whether it's because Shin just sucks dick with a glaive compared to a sword, or the difference between a regular old glaive and the king's sword, or the mangaka wanting to make Shin less of a mass murderer, or maybe all of the above, it's a fact that no one comments on it yet the art is incredibly consistent in this regard. The amount of time Shin cleanly bisects someone with a glaive can be counted on two hands, mainly for named defenseless guys like Reiou.

People often talk about how the author pussied out on keeping the kids alive, but anyone could have pulled that shit off back in the day and it isn't even the first time this kinda thing happened in historical manga. Even regarding modern works, Mercenary Pierre features an adaptation for Joan of Arc, where Joan actually lives because they faked her death. That's a much bigger change than just two brats, and while MP creates such a twist to finish the story, the two brats actually have been set up to have a purpose in the future by Hara.In original history the Eunuch that the Queen favors is a big shot but is mostly unrelated to the Queen, and he ends up ruining Qin. Now with his love for the Queen, coupled with surviving children that can serve as legitimate heirs, it gives us interesting ammo on the downfall of Qin arcs.
So it's not like Hara just randomly chose to do it because he wanted to make Sei a nice guy. It has repercussions.

It's usually rankedHakuki > Ousen > Riboku > Renpa among Chinese, but it's pretty much based on silly shit. Hakuki has won close to 100 battles undefeated and almost a million enemy soldiers have died going up against him. Ousen well, you know. Riboku and Renpa basically get in cause they were so fucking tough that the former two had to play politics to pull them out cause a frontal confrontation would just stalemate, and historically I don't even think Riboku ever loses, the participation at Sai was the author's work. Renpa is probably the only guy who lost legitimately, and that's cause he was facing Hakuki all day.

It's a pretty massive spoiler.It's time to invade Chu. There's a war council and the king asks how many soldiers are needed to do so, and Shin replies 200k, but Ousen calls bullshit and says you need 600k. Sei trusts Shin's judgement and sends him off with Mouten as his second..
They do well for a while, but Shouheikun (the smart 4 pillars guy whos the head of military affairs) betrays Qin since Chu was his homeland and escapes to Chu.
Chu is getting wrecked and their king is dead. The remaining Chu forces plead with Shouheikun to lead their forces and he agrees.
Shin is pummeling some army when he gets pincered by Shouheikun and Shin gets wrecked so hard that many of his long-serving officers are killed and Shin is forced to return to Qin.
Moubu and Ousen (I think it's these two) come in to clean up the mess and finish the invasion

This style of attack is foreshadowed by when he waits up at his earth fort staring down at Renpa if you remember, very clever on the author's part.

I'd still highly recommend you read all of them though, since the stuff covered so far by each of them is rather entertaining as fuck. Something like Ravages is basically an ensemble cast, other than two characters everyone else comes and goes with the passage of time (hence The Ravages of Time).
You can pretty much stop Vinland after the prologue unless you care about MUH REDEMPTION. Even Historie can be followed, there's plenty of fun arcs that are self contained enough.
