It's like an adult developed these interesting themes, art direction and music and then handled it to his 15 year old writer son who started to believe he's deep.
Purple prose everywhere, a bunch of pointless aimless scenes and episodes that didn't support the main theme of the show, boring as fuck battles, the opposition has terribly written goals. "I must defeat Casshern because I'm Shadow the hedgehog I guess!" Bunch of nothing. The show peaked at episode 2.
Of course, I haven't seen Ergo Proxy.

That one part of Genius Party, by miles. The only people who think otherwise are those who haven't seen it, I can fucking guarantee it.
Also Subete no F ni Naru really pissed me off because of how pretentious it got. There was a perfectly decent mystery scenario there and when the stoy focused on it the show and it's characters actually became pretty enjoyable and engaging
too bad most of the series is clogged up with really shallow spiel on how shitty/wasteful "life" is and dresses this up as an insightful observation instead of something every teenager angsts about atleast once in their lives

That's a different discussion entirely to the one being had though. Fans aren't relevant in regards to the quality of a series.
I'd argue that Monogatari is less pretentious and more opposite extreme, it's really fucking condescending. It beats you over the head with it's mostly pretty obvious (and often dumb, Nise's the most obvious example of that) themes, it's less of an issue in the LNs to an extent where monologues take a couple minutes to read compared to the anime where the same monologues get chopped up yet still somehow take 10+ minutes to complete but this issue is still always there. The best arcs are the ones like Hitagi End and Sodachi Lost/Riddle where it's semi-wrapped in some sort of mystery plot which ends up justifying a lot of it's way of exposition dumping but even then those arcs still suffer from big dumb election speeches everywhere.
The Kizu movies seems like the series first attempt at actually taking the material and trying to turn it into something suited to a audio-visual medium instead of the usual slideshow fare. It remains to be seen how succesful they'll be here since all we have to judge at the moment is the first one where nothing happened.
