What was the true "Golden Era" of /a/?

Was there ever even a "Golden Era" present on /a/? Is the best time on /a/ relative to when you first arrived, or have there been better times since you have arrived?

How is it that some memes that were extremely popular have died out completely whereas others are still going strong to this day?

ITT: Your experiences with /a/ and your hopes for the future.
>>
By the way, /a/ currently has 140.4M posts while /vg/ has 139.4M posts. We could be literally less than a month away before /vg/ overtakes /a/'s post count.

Does this depress you?
>>
Everyone's golden era is different because everyone was 16 at a different time
>>
>>140407884
Why would having less posts depress anyone?
Being less popular is good.
>>
>>140407925

For over 10 years now, /a/ has been regarded as 4chan's third biggest board. /vg/ has long since passed /a/'s posting rate (as has /pol/ and other boards), but once /vg/ passes /a/'s post count, it will be official: /a/ will be 4chan's 4th largest board for the first time in 4chan's history.
>>
>>140407884
/vg/ literally encourages circlejerks, though. It's like a board full of it's time threads with extended post limits. You really can't compare the two.

And the golden age was, of course, the first six months I was on here.
>>
I hope generals, simultaneous threads about the same theme and needles tripfagging become bannable in the future.

This is not going to happen though.
>>
>>140408041

That will NEVER happen. Banning generals on /a/ is like banning ponies on /b/ -- it's a great idea on paper, but all it will do is encourage people to spam it needlessly.
>>
>>140407982
I really don't understand why anyone (with more than 4 braincells) would care about this.

June 8th, 2009 - 22000000 {22M} on /a/
April 24th, 2011 - 6000000 {6M} on /vp/
October 27th, 2011 - 115000000 {115M} [S] on /v/

November 6th, 2013 - 217000000 {217M} on /v/
December 18th, 2013 - 2000000 {2M} on /hr/
January 27th, 2014 - 101010101 on /a/
September 24th, 2015 - 131313131 on /a/
November 9th, 2015 - 133333333 on /a/
November 17th, 2015 - 2000000 {2M} on /an/ and 317000000 {317M} on /v/
December 24th, 2015 - 321321321 on /v/
January 14th, 2016 - 61000000 {61M} on /pol/
January 22nd, 2016 - 8000000 {8M} on /gif/
February 3rd, 2016 - 137000000 {137M} on /a/
February 9th, 2016 - 327000000 {327M} on /v/

April 5th, 2016 - 27000000 {27M} on /mlp/
April 7th, 2016 - 138000000 {138M} on /vg/
April 16th, 2016 - 58000000 {58M} on /int/

It can be argued that KoG's influence on 4chan is stronger now that it has ever been in the past, just not as much on /a/ anymore.

I'm not going to sit here and post screencap after screencap. If you don't believe it, just check the archives for the specific boards listed.
>>
>>140408140
Nowadays, rather than starting a thread about a specific topic and letting it live or die based on its merits, people start a thread based on a specific anime and it hangs on the board for 24 hours or more without fail until it hits the bump limit. General threads destroyed /a/ just like they did /v/. An anime - generals board would be a godsend.
>>
>>140408353
Again, if you actually cared about that, you would have left almost a decade ago.
>>
>>140408233
I used to see 4chan as a /b/ site 10 years ago.
To be fair, 4chan was more fucked up back then, every week I would see 1 or 2 CP threads on blue boards. I hardly see illegal content nowadays.
>>
>>140408391
>An anime - generals board would be a godsend.
Kill yourself.
>>
>>140408377
Great idea! Let's just get the mods on board and, oh wait no we can't because the mods decide what the board is not the user base. And the one mod who agreed with /a/ about generals was purged himself.
>>
>>140408391

News Flash: People. Just. Don't. Care. You see that Pokémon thread on /a/ with 500+ replies that has been up for about 20 hours now? They have an entire BOARD for Pokémon, yet there it is, sitting on /a/. You can literally make an Anime - Generals board, and although a huge portion would move to that board, the small, highly autistic portion would stay on /a/ out of protest and continue to post generals regardless of how many times they got deleted/banned.

The only absolute way to get rid of them for good would be an incredible amount of moderation.
>>
>>140408377
>ban their general
>Keep banning
Right, because I am mod.

Since you're too dumb to get this: mods approve this shit. You can cry and report all you like. The mods won't ban them. You can keep bitching about it being loser talk all you like while in reality you just have no idea what the fuck is going on,
>>
>>140408391
That's what you faggots said about dealing with rec threads. Guess what? /wsr/ basically became MAL and they still can't stop making rec threads on /a/.
>>
>>140408391
The day this board splits even further is the day I leave this place for good. Jesus fucking christ, that would be so horrible. All it would manage to do is make /a/ lose its subject theme. Just like it did for /v/. /v/ isn't about video games anymore after /vg/ was created(although you could argue it was like that before, but that was the final push).

So I hope you'll enjoy an /a/ that gets threads only about waifu circlejerks and meta garbage, because that's what would happen.
>>
>>140408451
>mods approve this shit
Mods tolerate this shit because they don't want to start banning anime/manga based on a fanbase. That's why garbage like RWBY is "allowed".
>>
>>140408377
Wow, banning them is all it takes? What a brilliant idea, can't believe I didn't think of it... oh wait, I did. I reported the threads and mods don't give a fuck.
>>
>>140408440
>>140408451
That's a different problem though. It's not a case of 'it can't be done', it's a case of 'it won't be done'.

>>
>>140408491
/vg/ and /wsr/ taught us that you can't give these people a safe space, you have to eliminate them.
However, similar to US politics, generalfaggots now run 4chan. Asking the mods to get rid of generals is like asking the fox to redesign the chicken coop.
>>
>>140408493
>That's why garbage like RWBY is "allowed".
A mod practically camp in the threads to babysit and delete any other posts that disagree, while a bunch of other shit threads are still left untouched.

That's not a mod 'tolerating' it. That's a mod openly wanting that shit here.

>>140408512
Explain that to >>140408377 instead. Unless you're him, in which case, your initial post was stupid since you're the one who confused the situation in the first place.
>>
>>140408512
Except it isn't. More than 50% of the board for the sake of not doing the actual counting is actually not generals, unless you're retarded and have no idea what a general is. You can cry and whine all you please about Jojo and whatever other shit like One Piece and Yugioh. If you go and take a look, you'll see that they're the minority.
>>
>>140408546

2007 was the year of innocence. It can be argued that 2007 was when /a/ really sped up to its peak. There were some time periods where /a/ was actually going faster than /v/ or /b/. Death Note, Lucky Star, Code Geass, Gurren Lagann -- truly, that was a great time to be alive.

I could make another one of these, but the problem lies in /a/ not really having much of a personality anymore. All I can see going on it is something Jojo related, Reiji ARC-V antics, some Dragonball Super stuff...and what else? Everything else is so bland and uninteresting.
>>
>>140408628
I don't give a shit about other boards. Just because there are boards in worse conditions doesn't change any damn thing about the situation on /a/. If anything, it's that sort of 'at least we're not X' attitude that make people complacent until it's too late.

The point went over your head a little.
>>
>>140408442
>the small, highly autistic portion would stay on /a/ out of protest and continue to post generals regardless of how many times they got deleted/banned
This is the real problem, there's no way to get rid of these people. They are fanatically obsessed with their favorite series and even if you made it against the rules they would still shitpost day and night 24/7 just out of spite because they're horrible people. If they're not having fun then nobody will.

And what do you propose we do to fix /a/? /a/ has been complaining about /a/ SINCE 2007. It is literally never going to change.
>>
>>140408491
Agreed on the first point; /v/ died years ago, even before the split. However, waifu circlejerks and meta garbage are not exclusive to outside general threads - general threads are practically the worst offenders for having zero content, zilch, just bumps, so that pure shitposting and waifu circlejerks and meta and everything "/a/ culture" become preferable to that. Would you rather have 5 threads of 20 posts each of "/a/ culture" with one eventually reaching 200, or 1 400-post monstrosity on X show of the season? The 5 threads may look worse, but the 400-post thread is worse for the board because of how many time it bumps.
>>
>>140408659
Of course not. The need to make one big general meant that people are contended with sticking to their own circle and don't interact with others anymore.

It's why a jojo thread is so different from a bleach thread, which is in turn so different from an aikatsu thread that it's hard to believe they're supposed to be from the same board.
>>
I don't know about the "golden era" but the absolute worst era was before captcha. The spam was fucking ridiculous. It hit an all time high when Accelerator would go on a spree. 8 pages worth of his faggot ass face.
>>
>>140408546
I have to agree. There were a few months there in 2015 that were enjoyable and things actually looked decent. Now there is literally nothing but generals and overused memes. God forbid you enter a general for a discussion that doesn't involve image dumping or circlejerking, you will get shouted down by a bunch of retards who think what theyre doing is the norm because thats all they've ever seen on /a/, fucking generals.
>>

You didn't like GIRUGAMESH and clockwork orange?
>>
>>140408706

I've got some news for you, and I know this will be a hard pill to swallow:

They are NOT, I repeat, NOT, fanatically obsessed with their favorite series. They are fanatically obsessed with posting with other people about a series they can easily talk about. There is a HUGE difference. They don't care what they are talking about as long as they are able to talk about it and get a constant, steady stream of responses. It's like a succubus. The succubus doesn't care if the man it is sucking from is a hot stud or a fat, obese, lazy neckbeard. All it cares about it is subsistence.

The hyper autists don't care about the anime they discuss. They just care about their subsistence, and they will literally spend, as you said, day and night 24/7 doing everything they can to keep it going.
>>
>>140408712
Solutions have been proposed. It just won't happen (proper mods). And that in itself is not justification for allowing shitty actions to be taken.

>Accelspam was the chemo curing this board

The first time he ran the script was on a Homura thread back in August of 2011, simply to test if it worked.
He only gave the excuse that he didn't like Homura so he decided to trash that thread at the time.

After that he started to spam some particular threads here and there, simply because I also guess, he didn't really liked them.

As time went on, he was given a persona, as similar to Accelerator due to the common threads at the time "How do you kill Accelerator", etc. Simply because, much like the spammer, you couldn't really kill / stop him.

He took a liking to this persona and decided to make a tripcode, naming himself from there on in up until his disappearance as the Accel spammer.

He then decided to spam more specific threads, such as Naruto threads or more things he didn't consider to be appropriate in /a/.

In other words, he took upon himself the envision of that this board's content should be, and like a hero of justice, he committed himself to purge anything and everything that went against his ideals.

Though sadly this proved too be too much of a impossible task or maybe he just went mad with power.
Either way, when he leveled up to level 6, /a/ was constantly spammed for hours on in.

Those times were a constant. Until he ascended.

This script up until today continues to be a amazing work of code and a proof that if you really want something, even if that something is to mindless spam a Anime imageboard, you can achieve it.

Those were simpler times. I enjoy and miss both the good and the bad things about them.
It's been more than 4 years now. Time goes way too fast.

Basically every general is. They go against the premise of the site, but you can't just kill them, you have to relocate them. I would consider 2 main eras of 4chan. Pre-2007 and Post-2007. Post-2007 has honestly not changed that much. In fact it's probably better now because the ronery/no gf off-topic spam threads are long gone, crossdressing "trap" attentionwhore threads are mostly gone. There are more on-topic threads than ever and even the fetish threads at least mostly stay in the realm of directly relating to anime/manga.

I've been here a while and i guess one trend i've noticed is, i guess i'd call it the stronger desire to emulate the japanese audience?

The emphasis on moe and waifus, probably not helped by the deluge of moe series and there has been a vocal group of /a/ posters who felt that any anime that isn't moe is trash, and you can only truly appreciate anime when you've gotten to the moe stage.

Not that i dislike moe, but i've always preferred the serious, slightly edgy series and comedies.

That's the problem. Instead of moderators modding a whole board, they have learned to sit in specific threads and mod only those. >>

I don't know if generals can be completely removed. People are still going to want to talk about those subjects, and to delete any thread on that subject just because it might morph into a general is actually asking to outright ban a lot of series with legitimate reasons for discussion (new chapter came out etc). I also remember generals existed long before we started calling them that; it was just "____ thread". Bleach/One Piece had constant fucking threads all the time in the early days of /a/. Even after that huge user shitstorm against the Big 3 overall they still had long-ass threads all the time. Same with Index and Death Note etc, they often had threads that hit bump limit.

The other thing is that 4chan's innovations have only vastly helped generals be more viable overall in the years. Instead of click through multiple pages (amusingly some boards seemed to have a lot of users unaware there was something beyond the first page) you can just pull up the whole board in the catalog and find the general. 4chan's built-in temp archive makes it super easy for generals to link back to old threads to continue conversations; you sometimes even see people continuing conversations on quoting from archived posts.

I think one thing that could facilitate less stagnant use is to immensely lower the bump limit on threads. Back down to 300, but ideally even 200 or less imo. Threads constantly die, but when they are remade are revitalized. Pictures can be reused in different threads more, different OPs can change conversations in threads rather than carry on the same stale talk all day etc. I forgot when moot changed it higher on here and on /v/, but having 500 post threads on /a/ really helps facilitate not just general having long staying power but board stagnation overall, because any thread that isn't a common general can still last a few days if even one or two people slowly bump it and it's otherwise boring and useless to all.

This, really. Macross Δ airing was a godsend, I don't remember having this much fun in /a/ consistently since last year. The previous season was filled with such horseshit that no ongoing anime thread was interesting. This one is more promising.

There is some jani and mods who participate in some of these general threads. I always get a warning for reporting the useless circlejerking monster musume general.

Oh now that I think about it reddit has pretty much killed off every forum in existence hasn't it? Fucking hell, its nearly impossible to find isolated unique communities anymore on the internet they're all being assimilated into these massive content aggregators.

And there were times when they were also confined to exactly one day a week. And people actually stuck to it.

Lowering the bump limit without fixing any systemic issues is just only going to inflate general # counts. We'll have drawfag #10000 or whatever soon enough.
