I'm pretty sure Sony is just forcing him to make most of his tracks vocal colab stuff now because vocal albums regularly sell better than just straight show tunes. Too bad it makes for some of the most off putting and jarring soundtracks out there now. It doesn't seem like he had that restriction forced on him until about the time of Kill la Kill. That's when I really started noticing his soundtracks getting shorter and shorter on the track list and more intrusive on scenes as opposed to accompanying and enhancing them. Sometimes it seems like the directors just have no way to fit them to scenes at all which really showed with Owari no Seraph. I don't know just everything about Sawanos music now just seems corporately mandated and forced onto shows. There was no building an organization but rather having him run away and unable to be accepted for whatever reason. Even Inori was such a boring character compared to C.C. because she's really just a Rei clone and not a good one at that. Suzaku didn't really "betray" Lelouch so that's a different situation. The part about the Innocent girls dying is valid, though that's also such a stereotypical anime thing.

Actually, it's the opposite. The director acknowledged that there are people who think Guilty Crown is shit, but he felt that those individuals were being too harsh.
He actually liked the experience of working on the show and other members of Wit studio have said the same thing, since this series is what brought them together (it's practically an unofficial Wit show). That said, Araki did say that he knows what went wrong, but he didn't say what it was.

Show had a shit script and was aiming too high for its own good. You never have this much setup if you dont know what you're doing in the end. E7 had that problem and that single flaw crippled the show down to below average tier shows.

I genuinely liked Guilty Crown.
I liked the characters, I liked Shoe's up&down progression, I liked Inori, I liked I am the Bone of my Void, I liked the Hitler shenanigans, I liked the OST, I liked that they even killed Hare.
The only thing I didn't like was the fucking ending though.

Gai might very well be the most ridiculous character in the show. He should have died several times and keeps coming back and I can't remember a single point where any action he took made any sort of sense even though he's supposed to be this great charismatic anti-establishment leader. It's like he was put there for the first half just to be a sort of antagonist towards Shu and then they decided on the whole they were childhood friends thing even though it made little sense and then he was just an even more generic sort of antagonist in the second half. Then again the show practically completely forgot what it started off as an arc or two in similar to what Aldnoah.Zero would do a few years later. Aniplex is just really really fucking bad at putting together originals with coherent stories, possibly because I think they just don't give a shit and are just looking for it to make money anyway possible and if that means changing things constantly and just forcing the staff to make stupid as fucking writing or character decisions than so be it. I've stopped expecting anything out of their originals nowadays cause either they have terrible ideas like lets just make everything suddenly grimdark and shit all over the characters for twitter buzz or just bad ideas in general like fucking up an entire characters chance at a redemption arc because they thought audiences would respond better to a cute girl getting the finishing shot instead of the adult male it was supposed to be.
Anyway my favorite Gai scene was when they fire this orbital laser at his location and every single person in the vicinity around him dies except for him who was point blank in the center of the explosion and no explanation whatsoever is given and there's barely a scratch on him. Whatever slight seriousness I was taking the plot with at that point pretty much instantly exited consideration

It wasn't so much that as you could tell they kept having to change shit around almost on an episodic basis to appease producers so they could sell their music. Like Aldnoah Zero once the show stops being episodic Shu whines, Inori seduces him to get off his ass and he then pulls the context sensitive weapon of the week that is the exact thing Shu needs to save the day plots the circumstances of the cast and plot take such a hard shift almost every episode that it almost feels like the show is jumping between multiverses or changing up it's core concept every week. I still don't think I've ever seen another serial show be so all over the place with it's plot week to week. Like one week they could be fighting the evil government occupation and then the next Shu and Inori are running a dictatorship out of a school and then the next they're fighting their allies from the first half and then the next Inoris a monster and they're back to fighting the original baddies and then the next they're being betrayed again by allies and so on. Also pretty much anything relating to Gai makes no sense at all.
