You can thank Anno for this. Daicon IV was the seed. OG Gainax crew was the 90s punk studio. Evangelion was the anime that showed you could take the viewer to strange emotional places. It made things like Utena (and other Ikuhara series) possible.

It's good, really good. It's colourful as heck and it's got lively animation throughout. Not to mention Kobayashi's slick direction. Both episodes ooze his artistic sensibilities and you can really tell that a lot of work is going into this. I've seen people compare it to Penguindrum and I'd agree, it gives off this Ikuhara or Igarashi-esque atmosphere. It definitely carries the Trigger aesthetic but he's distanced himself from Imaishi quite a bit, which I think is a good thing. The story's good too, I think. Premise itself has a lot of potential and it's definitely got me interested in seeing where it'll go. I think a lot of people don't like Okada because she's very cold and analytical and melodramatic, but that fits in perfectly with the story, thematically. All the characters are super fun and eccentric, and it all works very nicely together, I think. I also wanna fuck Nico.

I like the animation, character design, and style, but that's about it.
The recent episode felt way too forced and contrived and it bothered me. Usually I'm a sucker for melodrama and character-driven plots, but this "mission" was too straight-forward. Not straight-forward in that it's easy, it's just too straight-forward in its purpose to forcefully bond the characters and threaten their profile and secret out of them.
And the MC is really really meh. It is really difficult to sympathize with him, and yes, I understand that is an integral part of his character, but not being phased by the Trigger antics and that whole scene where he revises his introduction fell so flat. Him being totally aware of his character flaw bothers me. Also when he is portrayed as someone who has no feelings or care for absolutely anything, but yet has enough cheek to say sarcastically say shit like "nice timing" when the bullies come around to kick his ass, that feels inconsistent to me.
And then there's Sonozaki. You're led to believe that she is just rich and so therefore has the resources to carry out all these Trigger bullshit... but when it's so reminiscent of Trigger bullshit and you get scenes like dogs breaking through glass windows, the basket Katsuhira was in crashing into the side of the building in such a way that no harm is dealt to him and he is allowed to remain in that position just long enough for both him and Chidori to finish their speech, the incredibly responsive yet soulless Gomorin mascots acting as Sonozaki's arms and legs-- it gets harder to believe the situation they're in.
It just feels like a horrible balance between cartoony antics and melodrama. It's supposed to be creepy, but it just comes off as cheesy to me. So I'm just a little skeptic as to whether I can actually enjoy this show. I really really like the character designs. Chidori a cutest and Maki is fucking hot.

Whether she's rich or not isn't the point. She's just supposed to seem like she has a shit ton of resources. Even though it's a shit ton, they're still resources that should seem sort of tangible or believable, because she herself is still a human character. But when her will is carried out so willingly by the world, it feels really off to me, because she is not an ominous faceless force of the world. She's a very opinionated human with a proposed agenda and a hidden agenda. It feels too tangible, but her actions seem so intangible. That's just how I feel though.
I don't hate Okada shows. I love WIXOSS, which a huge portion of its projects headed by Okada's writing, all of which I love. But I think this is probably what happens when she has no filter, and for me, it's clashing really heavily against Trigger's old school flavor of blatant cartoony antics.
Forgot to mention I love the key animation too. Shame there doesn't seem to be a lot of fanart of Maki and her amazing breasts.

I called them Trigger antics but it's probably more appropriate to call them cartoony antics. That's what Trigger's style feels like to me after watching LWA, KLK, and Luluco. I really liked second episode. It seems it will be more of a social experiment type of anime, hence the sci-fi notion by on one of the producers. And I usually not a fan of the Okada drama(especially Nagi), I like the idea and the potential in this one.
