That's not so much an /a/ thing but a 4chan which is a 'weird people' thing we tend to try and disassociate ourselves from the majority or "normies". Most of the time it's little choices in our lives we make without being fully conscious but generally it's all because we feel like outsiders this can often be seen as "edgy" as in liking something that others may dislike or vice versa, as it is in this case.

My advice... just potter along in life and enjoy what you can, you'll be dead soon enough.
>>
Spirited Away is the best ghibli but most of them are worthwhile. The only one I saw that's truly bad was Kiki's Delivery Service.
>>
>>140350319
Kill yourself for talking shit about Kiki
>>
>He fell for the meme
Watch everything by Takahata, all the early Miyazaki stuff + Wind Rises and Whisper of the Heart.
>>
>>140348009
Glad you enjoyed it. Now watch the other ones.

I feel like most of their films have strong stories but rather lackluster endings.

So literally every movie or tv show ever made.

Whispers of the heart and Grave of the fireflies are shit OP, don't fall for the meme

/a/ has shit taste, in general. we like stuff with waifus we can fap to and hate stuff with things like "art" and "story."

Mediocre at best. Ghibli's works are often overrated by normalfags and casuals so naturally a larger, more experienced anime community speaks out strongly against them. You probably believe trolls that enjoyed the movies but spoke out against them to rile people up as well.

its just to keep normalfags away

i hope you keep your part and from now on also shit on miyazaki movies
>>
>>140351196
If anything SA is actually underrated, as most normal people tend to look past the actual depth it has and just see it as some fun adventure movie (in large part due to the dub).
>>
>>140348009
/a/'s major criticisms of Miyazaki films are pretty thin.

>didactic
>sameface
>stiff animation
>lackadaisical plot

All of these have vague merit but essentially miss the point entirely and I don't believe they're sufficient enough anyway - it's just grasping to intellectualize a kneejerk contrarianism.
>>
>Ghibli
>good

Pick one
>>
>>140350546
>lackluster endings
I agree. I dislike how they handle love, too.
It's easier to think about some of them as short, simple stories of adventure without mayor conflict
>>
The primary problem with ghibli (and anything that qualifies as normiecore) is that it's not really worth inviting the types of people who will discuss it. Ghibli films are accessible and made for the widest possible audience, so their artistic merit is limited by this concession to pursue popularity and profitability. It's fine if you like these movies, but don't talk about it. Ghibli fans are some of the most insufferable people who think all anime is perverted ecchi trash made for fat ugly otaku. They watch ghibli movies and nothing else, but have the audacity to act like they're obsessive about anime and have superior understanding to yours.

Example: I actually liked inuyasha, but I never talk about it because I don't want to give people the false impression that I obsess over it, nor do I want to talk to the kinds of people who do obsess over it. You don't have to lie about your tastes or deny what you liked in the past just because of meta, but people say hide your powerlevel with good reason.
>>
>>140358335
I wish this wasn't true but it is. Fucking hell, I use reddit because it helps train the ability to write under numerical hivemind censors, and is a decent news ticker.

They have zero concept of live-and-let-live or being nonjudgemental about other stuff you might like. This is coming from someone who doesn't like "traditional" slice of life or "moefag shit" as /v/ would call it.

>>140351048
The only one that was shit by miyazaki was Howl, and that was just terms of jack shit happening.
>>
>>140356443
The only depth SA has is the setting of the spirit world, which is crafted masterfully. The script is terrible - the way conflict is solved and the 'love' between Haku and Chihiro is not built properly
>>
>>140358570

Something else to consider is that most of this discussion happens online, so you can assume that a lot of people are just trolling. People who understand this tend to have more fun online while ultra serious people get extremely upset. I've never met hyper judgmental people irl, but I have noticed that if you tell someone you watched something like dbz, they'll only talk about dbz and show zero interest in anything else you watched. That's the other negative connotation about these types of shows. They're normie filters that easily separate anime fans from casuals who only watched a few shows and don't really care for the medium as a whole.

>>
The visual fidelity and music of every Ghibli movie is of the highest quality. It's enough to make them extremely immersive. To the point where it doesn't even matter if the script is boring on its own. But you can still rank your favorites based entirely on the stories since that's their only weakness.
>>
Spirited Away is literally a fever dream but critics say it's a moving and deep cinematic film
>>
>>140359290

Eh, Grave of the Fireflies hit me a lot harder than I had expected it to. Usually shit like that doesn't even phase me but something in the narrative made me feel just enough sympathy towards the characters that by the climax I was bawling my eyes out. Even so, I wouldn't say it was an ENJOYABLE film it was simply good. And honestly thats how I feel about all Ghibli films with the exception of Princess Mononoke. Totoro, Kiki, Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, they were all just mediocre to good.

Princes Mononoke is the only one I can say that had a strong enough narrative to make it more than just good.

Hisaishi is a god at composing musical scores that both fit and environment and add so much to the atmosphere. The soundtracks alone tell the story and are essentially a work of art.
>>
>>140359719
I don't use reddit, it's a godawful site.

Obvious picks aside I wanna give props to Ocean Waves, it's a stellar movie that more people should watch. Probably my favourite thing produced there which doesn't have Miyazaki's name on it.
>>
>>140348009
Stop taking /a/s opinions seriously. Ghibli is treated the same way shonen is around here because it's universally liked and there's a fear that it will bring in Gaia teenagers.

That and Miyazaki became a meme so now it's impossible to discuss his work seriously without pissing loads of anons off.

You know i actually agree with you. It felt like such a non film. I can't even remember there being a villain or antagonist in any real way. Although my fav film is castle in the sky which most people don't even know exist so maybe I'm wrong.
>>
>>140360353
Kiki is a coming of age story about a girl finding her place in the world and letting go of her childhood.
It doesn't need a villain character. The drama was character driven.
>>
>>140360353
>I can't even remember there being a villain or antagonist in any real way.
Most Ghibli movies don't have antagonists, they don't need them.

Fortunately, he hasn't retired yet but it's to be seen if he'll do anime soundtracks anymore.

Howl wasn't that great. Earthsea was kinda bad too.

No one really gave a shit about Ghibli films until Spirited Away won an Oscar. It only won the Oscar cuz it was a weak year for animation and the all White 50yo men thought it would be progressive to throw a bone for a diverse made work. Anyway Ghibli films are just like Disney films that with watered down stories and make them with quirks and their personal charms.

Spirited Away was probably the biggest single thing that got me into anime. When I first watched it as a child, the sense of wonderment that it gave me about the world of Japanese mythology was unlike anything the other cartoons I watched could do. And when I watched it a second time as part of my film class in HS, it proved to me I think that anime had a depth and breadth of complexity worthy of an adult, since by then I had long since stopped watching animated shows altogether.
