The Shia/Sunni conflict is based solely in who took over leadership of Islam following the death of Muhammad. This isn't even subject to debate, this is how it actually is. Nothing of their conflict with each other is based around religion except in how that religion impacts their politics. Neither side has changed or altered a single verse of the Koran to suit their political ideology, it all centers on whether or not the first Caliph was Muhammad's son-in-law or his father-in-law, and because Islam lacks a formal clergy, no one was around to make a call.

No, it affects who was supposed to run the Nation of Islam. The Koran itself is sacrosanct and has no bearing on the politics involved except in light of the fact that everyone involved in the poltics happen to be followers of Islam. Strictly speaking, their conflict should have ended when the Caliphate was dissolved, but instead it perpetuated over who would be ruling the FUTURE Caliphate that would unite Islam. Each side thinks that Caliph should come from their camp and not the other so that the future Caliph, Muhammad's true successor, would reward them for their faith in his bloodline and not those who were deceived by a pretender bloodline. It's pure politics, the religion is just a backdrop.
