I think Free S2, Tamako Love Story, Amagi, and Euphonium are pretty good. Phantom World was meh but I do think they're getting back on their feet. We have the upcoming Koe no Katachi and Hibike 2 as well, and Violet Ever Garden will probably be one of their big projects of next year.

Doing shows for Netflix isn't necessarily a bad thing, atleast they will get enough funding for it
but Netflix has an annoying habit where if the show is even remotely popular they will milk it relentlessly and order more seasons even if it means dragging out the story, see: House of Cards getting 5+ seasons even going on despite the original showrunner leaving.

Madhouse worked on two of my top 10 anime. But they really aren't the best studio. Someone like Production IG, KyoAni or Ghibli beat them in animation and quality control.
Outside of this, they hire out directors and producers. So stuff like writing and story boarding has little if anything to do with the studio itself. The success of a show like CardCaptor Sakura or Hajime no Ippo had to do from outside help. While the animation itself had massive swings in quality and budget.
And all of this is just considering Madhouse at its prime in the late 90s and early 2000s. Now adays, even a studio like A1 is doing better than they are.
