The wholesale destruction of a skyscraper is an incredibly rare occurrence. The necessity of using references in art entails the entire medium. If you ever want to learn to draw something, you use references. There is a reason there are hundreds of thousands of artbooks that are just reference pictures of random things. 3D modeling especially requires excessive referencing.

There tends to be a number of TV features on the creation process of an anime, it's a shame so few are subbed. There was one that followed Tetsuya Nishio while he was at Pierrot working on Boruto last year.

Overall, "color mastery" seems to have been lost over the years, looks like they just pick random colors that goes well with rainbow-haired harem.
