No, because actual horror is not scarejumps and gore, is something that makes you question whether you're fine or insane

Shiki is the only anime that has made feel a sense of horror desu.

So anime that uses hypnotics and subliminal messaging?

Yes - it just have to made you care about characters first and not create atmosphere where you are "sure nothing will happen to them in the end"

Good example would be Detective Academy Q deserted island ark.

No, something more like Higurashi, where not only the characters didn't know what the hell was going on but the viewers themselfs didn't know what whas happening. At least for me, horror is the feeling that everything you know is a lie and not knowing what might happen, leaving you with a sense of being defenceless.

Think about when you go to a hunted house, you're not scared because there are spooky ghosts, you're scared because you don't know what might be in there
>>
Yes, go watch episode 22 of Oniisama e...

Horror in general is hard to make work, all the more so in anime.

I mean think about it, there have been maybe a handful of genuinely amazing horror movies ever, and that medium suits horror far better than episodic animations.
>>

See Mayoiga this season - its not scary at all since we by default know most of the cast will die. Its more of a comedy.

On other hand Sousei no Onmyouji - a kids shounen, where out of nowhere the cute heroine will be mutiliated and her legs ambutated for good where you woudnt expect it at all in that kind of story - is impactful.

Or if you want the only "proper" horror this season, watch Sailolr Moon

MAKE IT JAPAN
REEEE
JUST FUCKING MAKE IT ALREADY GOD DAMN
>>
Yes, but it has to be done in a realistic art style. Body horror is a staple, and it won't work with typical anime style - you need Junji Ito's style at the very least.
Also, atmosphere and knowing where to strike. Music is important here. I've watched plenty of horror anime, and the only scene that got me wasn't even from a horror series - it was the end of the first episode of Aku no Hana, when the distorted ending song suddenly starts playing over a very intense moment, and you get the feeling the character himself hears it - he's gone off the rails. That was a good moment.

it would be like that one ghost stories mini anime they aired a year or two ago. that kind of work is best enjoyed read.

I watched Shiki recently knowing absolutely nothing about it, and honestly for the first 8 episodes I was pretty creeped out. The slow pace, the growing tension, and just uncertainty of what was going on I really enjoyed. There's clearly something unsettling going on and yet there's never any firm confirmation that it's undead monsters. I did think that there was a possible twist that Yuuki was just insane and was imagining everything.
Then the show confirms that it's just vampires and it becomes a drama instead of a horror but oh well.
>>
>>140264833
Yeah, Shiki started off really well and actually creeped me out. But once you know what the threat is and the vampires start getting dialogue, they just become standard antagonist monsters that you can find in any anime. It'd be hard to develop a plot that can maintain the mystery and suspsense needed for horror for a whole cour.

This. I liked Higurashi because of that. That being said, when things started being pieced together it wasn't really scary anymore. Though I did want to see how it would be resolved

On a psychological level, yes. I found the ear-drilling from Kaiji and all the Johan scenes in Monster to be quite unnerving.

I don't think the medium is suited for horror. I am yet to see one genuinely scary. If I were to guess why's that, I'd say its because the art is too abstract to create a proper atmosphere.

Tension and atmosphere is super important in horror movies. Anime directors never get that right since there are only a few good ones out there. Without tension it's just gore without being scary.
>>
Japan are masters of horror. Just not horror anime. They make great horror books, manga, films and especially games. They just can't into animu.

It might be a generational thing. Japanese horror was really strong pre-2000. Most things since have suffered. Look at the original Ringu compared to those ridiculous Sadako 3D movies. They even dropped the ball on the Ao Oni and Corpse Party live action movies. Modern Japanese Horror has more in common with that awful period of American horror where you got shit like 13 Ghosts, I know what you did last summer and all the rest of the Teen Horrors.

I will say the live action Fatal Frame movie was fucking breathtaking though.

If they could adapt Junji Ito shorts with an actual budget and a good director, then yes.

Otherwise no.
>>
>>140263795
Shiki was just dumb. All the characters in it acted like complete idiots. I think one of the biggest problems with horror anime is that the writers have no idea how to write characters that react realistically to witnessing something horrible.
>>
I find it impossible to emotionally invest when someone tells me a show is horror or scary. It needs to be unexpected.
>>
>>140267649
Too bad the episode quality seemed to go down with each season. Season 3 didn't feel scary at all, it just felt nonsensical and not very memorable.

"The Next Floor" was pretty spooky
>>
>>140263480
Yes, but I think it has to absolutely abandon typical art style if it's going to have body horror, or stick very hard to pure tension based psychological horror

You try to spray blood and make twisted monsters in typical anime style, and the pleasing aesthetics get in the way and spawn guro fetishists like

I actually thought the first few episodes of Another had a great, really tense atmosphere. That sort of came apart as the plot went forward, though.

>>140267811

>>
>>140268749
Are you implying "Tunnel", "Behind," "The Other Side", "Merry-Go-Round", or "The Empress Doll" weren't scary or disturbing at all?

But yeah, Season 1 was definitely the best. I need to rewatch Season 2, though, but Season 3 wasn't bad either. Season 3 was just a bit predictable, because after episode 5 or so I braced myself to see some grotesque and disgusting monstrosity. It got very predictable.

It also missed the charm of the opening scene Season 1 and 2 had with "It's time for Yami Shibai" and "The End". That was much better.
>>
>>140269170
Yami Shibai.
>>
>>140269143
This is exactly how I felt which is why I hate Another so much. Huge disappointment.
>>
>>140269173
I felt like "Tunnel" could've been a bit creepier? I remember reading something that disturbed me as a child that was slightly similar in concept but much more terrifying.

A slide keeps popping out gross hivemind children and they grab a girl, force her down the slide, and instead of going out the other end she falls into a fleshy tunnel in the middle of the slide. She's then eaten alive by the "termite queen" and used to produce more insect children. It was extremely detailed too.

"Behind" was a highlight of the season along side rat waifu's episode, but I didn't find the other ones all too scary or disturbing comparatively. I might be a bit overly critical though- I didn't find any of them bad (except "In The Water", that one didn't have enough build up for me to find it scary at all) just not as great compared to previous season.

Ghost Hunt wasn't really horror or scary, more shoujo, but there were a few parts that were chilling. Like the ghost that bathed in blood and the small kid that died in the cold playing hide and seek. That was sad.

It's very hard to pull with 2D art-style compared to say 3D, because it's much easier to tickle the uncanny valley with a 3D model. Since most anime/manga are short on details when it comes to anatomy, it's harder to make them genuinely unnerving.

Not impossible though, you just need an artist with experience in this sort of thing, or make use of shit like rotoscoping, Aku no Hana looked like some post-modern horror story at times.
>>
>>140263480
