I think the manga handled it a little better. He shoots people but just enough to wound. Anime Vash was too pacifistic, but I actually didn't mind the anime for that. It was nice.

This. Some people in this thread, including OP since he probably wanted this moral discussion, are deluded if they think a person who kills is automatically stronger than someone who tries his hardest not to.
Vash has seen through hell over the years and doesn't want others to lose their lives so easily for stupid humanly reasons. There are times where he gambles over whether saving a bad guy is arguably good or not for the greater good, but those conflicts are the main stuff of Trigun. No matter what he does, his motto is no kill, and the conflicts and faults that come with that life separate him from the superior entity he's meant to be and the human who lives in a world where people easily fall to temptation.
tl;dr: he's a really well-written character who explores some questions on moral boundaries and limits. If people can't see that and choose to label him as "generic" or "annoying", then it's just the way they perceive that kind of character. There's no judge to decide whether what he does is good or not, but that's the complex part about Trigun.
