Thought the episode was pretty good, I liked Nico's meltdown a lot and the entire ending scene from the crane onward was great. Very sweet confession which is fucking cruel since obviously Chidori is gonna get bullied hard in this show. Also the whole bit in the morgue looked awesome. I haven't seen anyone really mention the character acting in this show but I think it's stellar, the designs are detailed but they're expressive as hell. Tons of personality.

The ideas are there, I think the translation/writing is really messy and the direction is a bit off. If it wasn't trying so hard to be a trigger show with the over the top eccenticness and reactions, it'd be better.

The problem is that the director is the one who wants to make Mayoiga a funny "kill them all" horror show. Okada is doing what she always does, and this director is smart enough to utilize her bad writing to make funny fodder characters. Thinking about this episode, it kinda breaks one of the unwritten laws of storytelling; show don't tell. It sets up a premise where the characters just have to tell the viewers straight up what their character is about. The show lacks finesse, which is par for the course for Trigger, but at the same time it's holding back on the white knuckle joyride trigger is good at. I don't think Okada and trigger is a good match. early days still they could turn it around.

First episode exposed nicely and second developed the characters, and if it felt "forced" (I don't like to use this meme word) it was literally because they were FORCED to do so, I still don't care about them but this dynamic helped to save us from the irrelevant "building friendship" episodes. You can't be distant when everyone know your more shameful secret so this was a pretty clever move IMO.
Also I don't think 12 episodes is necessarily bad for this. Because we'll probably have all the cast in every episode due to missions and pain sharing and they'll be revealing themselves in a equal way.

After the first episode, I wasn't quick to jump on the exposition hate wagon, I thought it had a lot of potential, with an interesting premise.
Some anons claimed the first 3 episodes were a prologue of sorts, with source from the studio, staff etc.
Finding it that it's only 1 cour is honestly worrisome. Three fucking episodes for a prologue, to introduce the setting and characters, out of 12. That's a third of the entire anime, enough for some anons to drop it on the 3 episode rule.
But this episode honestly didn't bode well. Hearing about the "each Kiznaiver has a secret" beforehand, it sounded interesting.
This entire episode was honestly a contrived "get to know each other" plot, masked by looming danger which everyone who isn't a retard knew wasn't serious.
The whole danger subplot just felt stupid and ridiculous, it was beyond obvious how trivial it would be, they even did the countdown at 1 second before stopping cliche.
I was expecting episode 2 to introduce an ACTUAL mission, something to risk their lives on. Instead we get this contrived pretend mission with obviously no stakes, in order to give forced character development.
They could've lengthened it out over time, give each character an episode to overcome their secret, with the help of the others.
But instead they decide to dump all the character traits and personality on us in one episode, like they dumped the exposition and world-building on us last episode.
We even got a fucking confession for fuck sake, which felt underwhelming and obvious. Chidori's character has absolutely no depth now, her obvious crush was her entire character.
The other issue was the secrets themselves, because they ranged from important character defining and interesting, to mundane and who gives a fuck. Pretty underwhelming in general.
So far his feels like episode two: meet the characters of the prologue, rather than episode two.
It's shame really, the direction, art, music and VAs are all on point.

All the characters are shallow stereotypes and their character drama is bound to be uninteresting or over the top edgy shit.
Main character can't feel pain do to super DEEEEP edgy traumatic experience he was forced through just because.
Another weak reactive main character who can't move the plot on his own, so things just happen to him, literally other characters move him from one plot point to the next and he has no clear motivations/goals.
His just another uninteresting dead pan character with white hair, we be better as a side character desu.
The idea that sharing wounds will some how bring about world piece is absolute pretentious garbage, holy shit who wrote this.
Overall 3/10, worst show this season by far. I rather watch mayoiga, at least that show won't take itself so seriously so I can just laugh at it.
Also esdeath little sister totally isn't the same bitch that the mc knew in his past but tragedy + amnesia(classic) back story made him forget.

Unfortunately even with this episode which was supposed to help us get to know the characters, nothing resonated with me. Episode 3 will be the determining factor whether I put it on hold and worse forget about it. I really wanted to like this series but there's nothing that grips me.
