It's quite simple really, they all come from broken lives. Some of them have been bullied, others have commited crimes. They all see this shit as their redemption, a way to start over. So when it falls apart, it doesn't take long for them to break.
Manipulation is also a powerful thing, so just add some story about onni's and it will work in the long run after one or two end up dead.
