From a writing perspective, I think it makes the MC exceptionally easy to write about. You can really drag out the feelings and emotions of other characters, and if the MC is dense then he wont pay mind to it. The audience can gain insight on these characters, while the dynamics of the series in question can continue.
Plus, with a dense MC it gives the author ample opportunity to drag out romantic developments and elongate their series for as long as they want.
