My honest opinion is that although there's a lot more shitty anime being released nowadays, the amount of "notable" anime seems to be about the same.
We as anime fans should be extremely grateful that the anime/manga industry is *growing*, and at a good pace at that.
Take a look at the video game industry if you want to see what real decline looks like. Video gaming is a fucking joke now compared to video gaming in 2006. There is a very clear decline in the video game industry in both quantity AND quality.

2006 was a great year, slightly lost to sight as it was followed by a couple more great years.
There are a number of omissions in the wiki, though -- Hataraki Man was 2006; and the Washizu arc of Akagi carried over from 2005 into the winter season.

2006 was the first year I got into anime with subtitles (thanks to /a/). Watching Death Note with /a/ back then was hilarious. They spoiled the shit out of it for me, but I still enjoyed the show. LADIES, DADDIES, and REMEDIES. Only oldfags from 2006 will remember what those words mean.
Wasn't even into anime in 2006, but it had Haruhi and NHK, which are two of my favourite shows ever, and Black Lagoon, Death Note, Ouran, Code Geass, Mushishi, etc, which are all great and pretty universally liked. I'd say it was a very good year, even if I wasn't there for it.
