I didn't even know that existed. Is this stuff hard to set up? I'm running out of space and want to have a nice setup.

A proper one or just a local one?
>>
>>140154817
I'm using mdadm, not an actual hardware raid card, so it's as easy as just repartition.

What do you mean proper? Rented space in datacenter? Nope, but I have 2 uncapped gigabit lines with dedicated IPs each at home. Feels good living in third world shithole.

HDDs? Yes they are internal, pretty sure mdadm can use advanced sata features not available through usb, esata multipliers are slow and work like shit on intel/asmedia (cheapest chink sil and marvell cards are fine); also I haven't seen externals with decent noise/vibration isolation and that gets important with 8 drives spinning and seeking 24x7

>ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE ME CRY?!
Oh, we also have really cheap electricity.
On the other hand, earning $800/month is considered really good here so while internet is cheap I could barely afford the hardware.

I usually download from nyaa but desu its tough to find 360p downloads. I often have to download from kissanime or this little website called chia-anime.tv
I wrote a program to fetch direct download links of all the episodes of an anime from chia-anime, then i put the script to download all the episodes on a spare smartphone i have, it downloads everything overnight

Decent SSDs and decent HDDs have roughly equal reliability now, although SSDs can lose data if they're left off for more than a couple months. HDDs are still piles cheaper, though.

Mine is fairly big because when I started to get into private trackers like AnimeBytes, I built a big file server. I basically downloaded my entire backlog to eliminate the excuse of having to download stuff... And I still don't fucking watch it.

To answer your question directly though, I have at least 40 series, 10 movies, and several OVA's.
>>
How about lifespan of common external hard disk?
>>
>>140176221
It either dies in a few months or lives for a decade.

Nas is still the best storage method

M disc has a ridiculous amount of lifetime though if you want to permanently archive your animes for your grand children's grand children's grand children's grand child in the year 2814

I don't bother saving anything beyond my absolute favorites. My Internet speed is good enough to just download on an as needed basis.

If the day does arrive that my ISP absolutely positively prohibits me from downloading a rip of Gunbuster, I figure it will come far enough in the future that the Internet will be awash with obsolete 1Tb drives of dank animu for sale, because everyone will have moved on to inscribing data on virtual quantum clay tablets that last longer than Nintendo carts.

Almost 2TB. I need to buy another hard drive.

I don't have a backlog, though, I watch as I download (720p most of the time), I've been watching ~20 shows each season for three years now, and a few anime movies here and there.

I don't understand how people would waste bandwidth and space on a backlog.

If that is 720p it should be about ~100 shows, less if 1080p, 480p is a joke and kill yourself instead of watching.
If you work 9-5 you have between 5-6 hours to watch every day. A 12 episode season is 4 hours of watching, twice to thrice that on weekends, you should be finished with that at the end of may, tops. Including hanging out with friends friday and saturday every weekend.

I only keep select shows I think I might rewatch eventually.
Keep them organized by:
>Show Name [Sub Group] Resolution

Also, have an excel spreadsheet that keeps track of every show I've completed in full since 2007. Ordered by year of release. Rating system goes:
- Didn't like, or wouldn't recommend.
+ Liked it, or might recommend.
2+ Really liked it, would probably recommend or rewatch.
