Yes they are internal, pretty sure mdadm can use advanced sata features not available through usb, esata multipliers are slow and work like shit on intel/asmedia (cheapest chink sil and marvell cards are fine); also I haven't seen externals with decent noise/vibration isolation and that gets important with 8 drives spinning and seeking 24x7

If that is 720p it should be about ~100 shows, less if 1080p, 480p is a joke and kill yourself instead of watching.
If you work 9-5 you have between 5-6 hours to watch every day. A 12 episode season is 4 hours of watching, twice to thrice that on weekends, you should be finished with that at the end of may, tops. Including hanging out with friends friday and saturday every weekend.
