When was the first time you realized anime is not like those American cartoons you watched as a kid?

The moment I saw my very first anime, Inuyasha. The artstyle and plot was so different from western shit I just knew it was special. Inuyasha was serious, beautiful and aesthetic. Cartoons just can't even compare to anime.

In 1967, when it was a cartoon that wasn't just funny talking animals.

Not there that's for fucking sure. I remember watching Harmony Gold dubbed Astro Boy (1980) at 5:00 AM or something before school back in the early 90's figuring there was something different and intriguing about it's art style and animation though.

There was this episode of G-Force/Gatchaman that fucked me up for a while.

In the ep, G-Force member "Princess" Jun was swallowed up whole by man-eating plants that were quickly multiplying. She was trapped alive in the creature's stomach amongst a giant field of them... and the rest of the team had no luck finding her.

Pressed against time, they're forced to firebomb all the plants before they can spread any further. The episode ends with the team thinking they just brutally burned their friend alive in a flowery sea of fire.

My young mind was racing and in despair. "What?? No!! Did they really just kill her?? Is she gone for good?! What a horrible way to die!!" That was the last episode of the series I remember watching. And the imagery stuck with me for years, even though I don't remember the rest of the series at all.

This was *very* early CN... like '95 or '96, when there was little-to-no other Japanese anime airing yet on the network. Even Sailor Moon had yet to be released. So the whole concept of serialized cartoons that did not wrap up nicely by episodes' end was very foreign to me at the time. I had seen no other American (TV) cartoons like it and I knew something about the series was way different from the usual fare.

Apparently, the chick was just fine and she is saved in the next episode.

But, fuck... I didn't know that.

When it had a storyline and the people there had somewhat "realistic" proportions compared to cartoons.
>>
>>140107083
Well, now we know we know why you're in this shithole then.
>>
I watched Pokemon religiously as a child. I think I was around five years old when I realised that "Hey, this series might actually be going somewhere" when Ash got more and more badges and actually got closer to his goal. Same thing with Yu-gi-oh! a while later, when Yugi and Jou actually got more and more star chips on duelist kingdom. And then there was that one time my parents started talking about cartoons and said something about Japanese cartoons having a special artstyle with pointy noses and big, angry eyes, which lead to think "Oh, Chinese cartoons may be better than regular cartoons then".
>>
>>140103826
Not really much difference other than most western cartoons have episodic plots and you don't really see much adult cartoons other than comedy series.

When I cried to disney pixar animation film instead of god awful repetitive japanese shit.

Can't they do something new? Transfer to another world is fine and all but please don't focused it on harem or romcom shit. Do something new please.
>>
>>140103826
A long time ago, but I also realize anime can look like American cartoons if it wanted to.
>>

>cried to disney pixar animation film
well and-
>god awful repetitive japanese shit.
why am i not surprised

every work has been done before, to a certain extent. what originality did you see in disney films in the last 50 (yes 50) years?
inb4 movies about folktales from a millenia ago.
>>
>>140109486
And there is nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>140108813
You convinced me. Western cartoons don't have haremshit and cartoons aimed at adults save for comedy series. Guess western cartoons really are better.
>>
>>140103826
When the names in the credits weren't french.
Most of the people around me believed that Candy Candy was a french show. And they were proud of it, calling it 'masterpiece'. Then came the manga boom, and suddenly, everything japanese was shit.

I emigrated to Japan 15 years ago, the hell if I ever get back to that retarded racist France ever again.
>>
>>140109628

All anime is the same shit. Japs are so obsessed with tropes and cliches that nothing is original.

There is literally nothing wrong with being racist. Japan is racist, that is why it can maintain its culture, that is why anime is unique, and why there's so few filthy gaijin.

The same, PLUS things like themas or kinds of characters you'll never see in american animation, and that's why anime brings new emotions every time.
It's american cartoons that are always the same shit, with the censorship, puritanism, the characters who are always all black or white and where villains always look like villains. Like we are all stupid and need a villain like looks plus villain like voice to understand what this character is in the story. So boring.
Add to that that everything America can do, Japan can do it too, even better. And that's it's not reciprocal even if cartoon has tried hard to copy anime all these last year (huge eyes everywhere)... it's cartoon that is dead. The better proof is that they are stopping to anime by hand and all is becoming FULL 3D CG...

There is something wrong and shameful when every time you say you're French, you only get compliments about your country and yourself, and then you remember about the 'common' anti-japanese racism in France.
>>
>>140109905
>Calls France racist
>Lives in an objectively more racist and xenophobic country
The US, Canada and western Europe are the only places on Earth where racism is considered bad.
>>
>>140110322
>more racist and xenophobic country
You don't know what you're talking about, I know. After 15 years living here, I know that Japan is FAR less racist than for example, France. A country that is supposed to have a long history of massive immigration, which isn't at all the case for Japan.
Japan has excuses. Frances doesn't.

Way back in '94 when I was four years-old and watching Cat Girl Nuku-Nuku, Project A-Ko, and Ranma 1/2 OVA's with tits in them, and Devil Hunter Yohko was basically porn; Devil City Shinjuku was violent as fuck, and Laputa was a lot more fucking serious than The Lion King. Urotsukidoji was literally pornography. The safest thing was Tenchi Muyo, which was risque and midly violent at best.

American cartoons were not about "adult" things, and the fan-dubs and shitty re-re-re-recorded VHS's from late night Sci-Fi showings and the back-ordered, barely official shit from The Right Stuf were certainly not for children.
