Godzilla was originally an allegory for the destruction caused by the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the reason why it resonated so well with Japanese audiences is because it presented the idea of their people working together to triumph over such massive destruction and build their country back up again.
Could Anno instead be drawing inspiration from the aftermath of 2011 Tohoku Earthquake in order to revitalize this idea? A lot of the imagery of the destruction caused by Godzilla that we see looks similar to the footage of the aftermath of the earthquake. Plus this year marks the 5th anniversary of the earthquake.
