Why hasn't this series hasn't become a masterpiece.
Mai Tokiha is one of the most interesting main character out there. Everything about this series is amazing and it's shame Sunrise never continue the franchise.

Mai is easily one of my favorite characters in anime and the doujin by Kensoh Ogawa is easily one of my all time favorites.
Otome kind of shot itself in the foot by taking the fuller figured, interesting Mai out and replacing her with some not-terribly-interesting flat chested lolis. I think I watched the first three episodes or so and just couldn't be bothered.

Tate was a shit character. I don't know exactly what his VA did to piss off the staff, but I'm glad it resulted in the character becoming literally a background joke in Otome. Even years later in that HiME beach special thing, Mai just casually mentions that they broke up because he pissed her off. It's great.
