That white haired kid was absolutely sure he had landed the killing blow on the villain, only to reveal to the kid that he had gravely wounded a close friend of his instead.
I don't recall if she survives or not but it's essentially weighted on him for the rest of the fight as the villain taunts him for making that mistake.

What he wrote is confusing, but it was supposed to be that it implies that it's possible Dio's ability is not to stop time, but rather the abillity to copy the Joestar's stands, which would make sense since Stands are metaphorical representations of the users, and "Usurpation of the Joestars" was pretty much the only thing in his head for as long as he could remember.

Yeah. I always associate "asspull" with "magical power up that wins the day for the good guy" but generally those don't have repercussions like the two HxH moments. Hell, nobody wins when Netero sets off the rose. I mean, I guess humanity does, but Netero and Meruem both end up losing that game.
Same with Gon and Pitou. Gon loses all of his potential and ability for a few minutes worth of a power up that he'll probably never reach in his lifetime again.
That's why I've got a hard time considering these "asspulls". They both beat the bad guy with something out of nowhere, but both are logically possible in the realm of HxH, and both don't lead to that victory that you'd see in other shonen. Like "the heart" in bleach.

Josephs was and wasn't asspull because his entire character is based around asspulls, so an asspull from him is entirely fine and not out of ordinary.
Jotaro getting time stop could be connected to dio would be something that anyone with a brain thought of, but I believe araki said dios stand came from himself, not jonathan, that's an asspull

I wouldn't call Jotaros time stop an asspull, though. It was established relatively early that each stand had it's own unique power (Less so with the earlier stands, but I blame that on Araki making it up as he went along). Up until then, Star Platinum had no power. Then suddenly The World is practically completely identical to Star Platinum, except it can stop time.
It was pretty clear at that point that DIO and Jotaros stands were in fact identical to each others.
