For manga, yeah that's rarely the case; however, some of the very well written Japanese romance novels are made men. Actually romance in manga (including shoujo and josei) are hardly good. If you want to read the better stuffs, then you'll probably have to work up your moon.

Yea, I did say cliches ruined most. But cliches themselves aren't bad, unless done wrong. And they are usually done wrong. It depends heavily on context, presentation, etc. Maybe I'm talking shit, I'm kinda tired.

sadly shoujo is heading toward that direction too. despise that it's getting a a lot attention lately, shoujo has become a shadow of its former self. One thing is that I don't get why people complain so much about Josei when they barely read anything. I'm quite disappointed that great romance like Red river and immortal rain will never get animated.

Romance better serves as a side component to a series. Like the sauce on the pasta. If you have 90% sauce and 10% pasta, it's gonna get old once the pasta runs out and all you have left is a mess. That and looking for a "Good" romance story is dumb. There are no "good romance" stories, so much as there are good or fun stories that have an empasis on romance.
I'd say just stick with Rumiko's works that aren't Inuyasha and you'll have a good time.
