in a medieval world when you're partying without a healer, I'd rather get the knife through the heart then the knife in the guts. one way kills you nice and cleanly, the otherway kills you painfully over a period of hours. Furthermore the groin area has one of the biggest arteries in the body running through it. cut in the right place down there and you'll bleed out in less then 3 minutes. just about as fast as having your neck sliced open. Top it all off in this setting, breaking your femur or hip will kill you off as well. through in the femoral artery and veins and the femur is definitely the no.4 place to protect after the chest/groin, neck and head. He'd be better off ditching his shin/feet protection for thigh guards of some sort.

Full plate armor was incredibly uncommon in the middle ages. Even among knights who were quite highly ranked compared to your ordinary soldiers.
Most would wear some combination of chain mail and coats of plates. Which is basically just a cloth or leather shirt with metal plates riveted onto it.

Look at the angle of the breastplate. Do you think the plate will magnetically hold the sword to it? No, the sword is going to slide off and, would you look at that, the plate is angled to funnel any attacks directly to the neck or stomach (not even to the side like logical armour).
