This series actually seems like a direct improvement. The visuals are better already, the fact that it isn't EXCLUSIVELY "HIT THEIR WEAKPOINT!!!" means that we'll see a wider variance in combat, there are a variety of weapons that will see regular use, the trains mean that we'll see multiple locations instead of just "inside the city" and "outside the city", and I have grown to enjoy the bizarre nonsense that the MC is doing in order to succeed. Just read the synopsis:
As the world is in the middle of an industrial revolution, a monster appears that cannot be defeated unless its heart, which is protected by a layer of iron, is pierced. By infecting humans with its bite, the monster can create aggressive and undead creatures known as Kabane. On the island Hinomoto, located in the far east, people have built stations to shelter themselves from these creatures. People access the station, as well as transport wares between them, with the help of a locomotive running on steam, called Hayajiro. Ikoma, a boy who lives in the Aragane station and helps to build Hayajiro, creates his own weapon called Tsuranukizutsu in order to defeat the creatures. One day, as he waits for an opportunity to use his weapon, he meets a girl named Mumei, who is excused from the mandatory Kabane inspection. During the night, Ikoma meets Mumei again as he sees Hayajiro going out of control. The staff on the locomotive has turned into the creatures. ikr, there's a big difference between criticizing something and just shitting on it. The former can tell us a lot about the industry and how to improve things, especially if we're creators and writers still learning the ropes of storytelling. The latter is just something assholes do to feel fulfilled. Sharing similar story elements to a previous work isn't a very good point of criticism. AoT does not own the tropes of "humanity not at the top of the food chain", or "humanity in walled cities" or the steampunk or zombies or monster fighting. These things are things and what really sets a story apart are the closer details of the setting and characters. Mumei so far doesn't seem at all like Mikasa in terms of personality. Ikoma isn't a berserker like Eren, but an inovater who wants to help people fight instead of jumping into the front lines.
