Mamoru Oshii creates with feeling, not sense. Some of his work might be internally consistent but don't try to work out what does or doesn't exactly make sense or why.

The movie's an incredibly vague and open statement about faith and losing your innocence. The girl carrying around an egg and refusing to give it up to a curious man might seem clear enough, but then things like the whales are weirder.

The whale to me brings to mind the cosmic urge, the way that men seem to feel drawn to some greater purpose, often involving the sea. Moby Dick is always the clearest way to invoke this, so I often think that 'whales = cosmic urge'.

To put is short, Oshii's musing on big ideas and questions he can't answer through the medium of animation.

You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs.
>>
>>139973536
But why did the man break the egg? And what was the long ending shot supposed to be?
>>

Guy was curious I suppose. With his weird allegory about his twisted version of Noah's Ark he talks about being lost indefinitely with only unanswered faith to provide hope, I'd say that the girl was content to just carry around the water forever while he wanted to force an answer no matter the consequences because he was done living in their crazy-ass world.

Don't really know about the final shot, it's been a while since I saw it. I don't think it's the kind of thing that's meant to have a clear answer , and that's probably the point. He forced something and hurt someone to get what he wanted, and he doesn't even know what that is. Something was going on at the end, sure, but was it worth it?

I think I'd need to watch it again and probably also reread some bible stuff to make clearer sense of it. Oshii was also a big fan of some out there European directors like Fellini, maybe watching some of his stuff could help.

the last minutes blew my mind, i got nothing from them can someone explain please ?

What in particular do you think needs explaining?

Well starting from this till the end. particulary why she gave birth of eggs containing (birds or creatures?). and then her turning into a sculpture.
the rise of that big eye thing...
>>
>>139975104
Don't remember the end specifically enough to be much help there. I'm just here to keep the thread alive so that somebody with a real answer might have time to find it.
>>
>>139975104
It may sound pretentious but the movie is rather expressionistic and meant to evoke a "feeling" and not so much a coded message.
Interpretations of that part will completly depend on the mindset of the watcher.

She turned into a sculpture on the giant God-eye thing as a form of reward/salvation for her faith for looking after the egg. The fact that there's a ton of other statues on the platform could mean that's how people in that world are chosen to be saved/ascended/whatever since the last shot reveals that the entire landmass they're on is actually the bottom of Noah's ark that has flipped over, and that the waters from the flood never receded and God just abandoned everyone.

>since the last shot reveals that the entire landmass they're on is actually the bottom of Noah's ark that has flipped over
That's what it was supposed to be? The best thing I could think of looking at it was that it was some sort of scale.
>and that the waters from the flood never receded and God just abandoned everyone.
I don't follow. There's the flood imagery in the ending, but it's in areas that the two travelled through and weren't flooded as they went through them. More than anything it looked like the world was getting flooded after the egg had broken.

The story the man tells the girl after he sees the tree carving thing is word-for-word the story of Noah's Ark, so I'm pretty sure that's definitely what it's supposed to be. Look at the last shot as it pans again to see what I meant about the flood - everything surrounding the ark/land is definitely either water just black nothingness, and considering the man's story that it's been so long since everyone has just forgotten that there used to be an actual world, that seems to fit a lot better.
