I read somewhere that anime otakus have a very bad reputation in Japanese society. How true is this?

Not japanese here but i guess it's okay to be an otaku,as long as you're sociable.
But in japan that's not the case, most otaku are hikikomori so that's why the society look down on them.
>>
>>139968994

Fuck off.

Never watch anime.

Read manga instead. The Japanese businessmen do it all the time.

Here's your answer, faggot: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=are+otaku+hated+in+japan
>>
>>139968994
First you have to realise liking animu =/= otaku. No one gives a fuck if you like one piece, ajin, etc. Hell even love live is a bit embarassing but you won't get more than a ribbing from your mates.

Otaku is beyond hardcore buyfag tier. You literally cannot talk about anything but your waifu and shit.
>>
>>139969071
Could you explain to me the situation in japan then ?
>>
>>139969054
It's basically the same as everywhere. You can be a weird fuck with unusual hobbies as long as you keep that shit to yourself. Of couse you can be honest with close friends and partners if you've been together long enough but don't fucking introduce yourself by telling them your favorite anime or manga.
>>
>>139968994
>it's not porn
what's the point
>>
>>139969140
>Otaku is beyond hardcore buyfag tier. You literally cannot talk about anything but your waifu and shit.
Literally what? You don't even have to be a hardcore buyfag, if you have ten nendos in your room, subscribe to a couple magazines, and watch fifteen anime a season, you're going to be called an otaku, regardless of whether you have other hobbies and a functioning life outside of that or not.
>>
>>139969140
You realize that otaku doesn't mean "only likes little girl anime," right? Someone who follows mature series for mature people like yourself to a serious degree would be an otaku as well. Like, Naoki Urasawa for example is indisputably an otaku, and he's pretty much the go-to favorite for newfags who are insecure about how sophisticated their cartoons are.
>>
>>139969260
You say that like it's the most normal thing in the world. Did you know normal people watch 0-3 live action shows and read 0-2 books and buy about 0-5 bluray DVD movies a year. It's no wonder people see you as weird if you spend so much time on a hobby, even if it's something socially acceptable like body exercise and going to the gym. If you spend hours every day on it, normal people will think you're weird.
>>
>>139969432
Normal people spends hours everyday doing nothing. Does that make them nothing otaku?
>>
>>139969421
Ironically, one of Urasawa's most popular manga in Japan is about a cute girl doing judo things.
>>
>>139969456
They spends hour being social. They are social otaku.
>>
>>139969432
It's a major hobby, of course you spend time on it. I'm saying being an antisocial freak isn't a prerequisite to be an anime/manga otaku, you just have to be heavily into anime/manga. Also, 15 shows a season isn't even an hour a day. Whereas my sister watched all of Grey's Anatomy last summer, and she's considered a totally normal person, as are amateur tennis players who train/play for ten or more hours a week, etc.
>>
>>139969482
>social otaku
The worst kind of otaku
>>
>>139969421
Otaku doesn't exclusively relate to animu full stop. I teach plenty of train, soccer and fishing otaku.

It's the degree that qualifies otakudom.
>>
>>139969456
People literally think it's better to be bored out of your mind and scroll through hours of facebook or instagram posts and "memes" all day or to talk with your "friends" about the same fucking thing for the hundred time then to actually spend that time on a hobby.
>>
>>139969509
>Also, 15 shows a season isn't even an hour a day

That depends on when they're scheduled.
>>
>>139969659
Obviously. On average, I meant. There is no way to apportion fifteen shows a week so that you watch hours every day like the other anon said.

My boss is Japanese. His bookshelf is full of manga, mostly shounen and seinen. He also regularly does boxing.
What you watch or read doesn't matter, the way you choose to show it off is.
>>
>>139969473
None of the people who post about how 20CB and Monster are "a breath of fresh air from all the moeshit Japan produces nowadays" have even heard of Yawara, though.
>>
>>139969776
>mostly shounen and seinen
I think we'd all already assumed that. Unless it's a literal fag or something, I'd be very surprised if a middle-aged man wasn't mainly buying shounen/seinen.
>>
>>139969421
Otaku is the equivalent of a person with an obssessive interest.
It doesn't have to be anime. It's just that anime is what the term is infamously maligned with.
>>
>>139969835
I blame social otaku for this.

Japan is a place that is very traditionalist and love their societal norms.
Being a weirdo with an obsession in something isn't a big deal with close friends and family, although in some cases it may not be good, but outing yourself as an otaku in public or at school is the equivalent of shooting your reputation in the foot.

And no, Konata is not a good example, either.

You people realise that "Otaku" is an insult, right?

Only the ugly and or fat ones. If you are good looking no one cares.

Not really. It's used as one, just like nerd/geek (or at least like they were before it became universally cool to be a nerd), but that's context-dependent.

How come work otaku get a free pass?
>>
>>139970283
Because in society, if you work, you are considered to be productive, and you can offset a lot of other negative stigmas with it.

>>139970283
Because they obey the plans of the money otaku.
>>
>>139970329
I'm wondering if the stigma's really to the level where you need to hide your hobby at all costs, or if it's just that you shouldn't talk about it when there's no reason to bring it up in a conversation (otaku are seen more as annoying than horrifying).

>>139970283
Because no one can reasonably give a fuck about what a self-sufficient person does in their free time (if I'm getting what you mean by "work otaku").
>>
>>139971460
Most otaku are self-sufficient but if someone finds out, it could end them socially regardless of their self-sufficiency. Work otaku don't have the same stigma about them as other otaku do.
>>
>>139971460
you really don't get even the basics of Japanese society
