I just finished this entire show yesterday and I have no idea why /a/ was so crazy about it.
This show was literally one of the worst KyoAni shows I've seen.
The plot was terrible.
Action was shit.
Kurumi looked retarded.
Mai was a lot more annoying than I thought she would be.
Reina (objectively best girl) had almost no good moments in the entire show.
So I have to ask the people who enjoyed it, what did you actually like?
It was honestly just such a generic and shallow show that I was considering dropping it but I continued just for Ruru and Reina.

If by "crazy" you mean "discussed it and cared about it far less than any KyoAni show I have ever seen" then yeah. It got relegated in importance/viewers as if it was a typical forgettable JCstaff or A1 show.
At least the girls were hot and it was a bit amusing/silly. That's really about all it had going for it though. Something about its tone didn't really work right; it was pretty light and goofy yet at times yet still somehow still too serious. It didn't really have comedic timing and kind of devolved into phantom of the week along with backstory shit. Which is just kinda boring overall.

I don't like most KyoAni stuff, but I was surprised that I even enjoyed this as I had gone in feeling it was going to be like every other LN adaptation. The episodic format and decentralized plot made it unlike most other adaptations and thus I actually enjoyed it more than I would otherwise. The people who dislike it most specifically site these things as reason why they didn't like it.

/a/ didn't go crazy about it at all. It wasn't even talked about a lot relative to other airing shows, which is when you know a show is really shit; nobody even bothers to talk about it, not even the contrarians.

Most everyone agrees. And if they disagree, it's because due to personal taste one other Kyoani show is worse than it. Nobody has it anywhere near being one of their favourites of Kyoanus, that's for sure.
I never had a good relationship with mother and as such I constantly desire for women to treat me in motherly nature, as if I were a child.
Perhaps that's why this show was so wonderful to me, especially the last few episodes.

What did you find annoying about Mai OP? She was a great girl specially in the last few episodes.
I found it a good show overall, at least from episode 4, onward. As the sum of its parts, it's a 6.8 on the non IGN scale, especially if we weigh the last half heavier than the first.
And can we give special mention to how solid the premise was? The idea of massive shared hallucinations was cooler than anything else that season, even if they didn't expand on it much at all.

It's a nice "show, don't tell" setting. They used Koito and Reina's backstory to show the troubles of first generation power users, they use Ruru and the foxgirl to show where phantoms can come from, they made Kurumi to show where these powers come from and what's their limits, etc. Helps to cut down on those monologues and spoken expositions for sure.
The episodes are also very loosely linked together so that one maybe can just cut through to the finale, but watching it all makes the last three episodes more sensible.

KnK felt even more unfinished than PW but the movie and the OVA did close up some stuff though there's still lots of unexplained things like the ring and the mother. PW's sequel, no matter what form it is won't have much holes to cover, the basics are done nicely.

Seems like it can't be helped then, because recently almost everything they do was made in such a way that a sequel was needed. Tamako needs a movie to round up the whole romance plot, KnK needed another movie to tie up everything, Free S2 was a big improvement over the mediocre 1st season, and I doubt that Euphonium movie would be an exact recap either.
