If the light switch were inside the bathroom then there is a high risk that it becomes wet. Touching a wet light switch can kill you.

Really my place has one outside the washroom and I always thought it odd. It can easily be fixed but it's one of those things you live with until you sell the house like chipped paint on the walls or cigarette burns in the carpet.
